This book provides a much-needed thematic and historical introduction to Hinduism, the religion of the majority of people in India. Dr Flood traces the development of Hindu traditions from their ancient origins, through the major deities of Visnu, Siva and the Goddess, to the modern world. Hinduism is discussed as both a global religion and a form of nationalism. Emphasis is given to the tantric traditions, which have been so influential; to Hindu ritual, which is more fundamental to the life of the religion than are specific beliefs or doctrines; and to Dravidian influences from south India. This book provides a much-needed thematic and historical introduction to Hinduism, the religion of the majority of people in India.

This book provides a much-needed thematic and historical introduction to Hinduism, the religion . I recommend this book for the reader who has some knowledge of Hinduism and would like to delve a little deeper into the subject. The book is clearly written, and every chapter is loaded with information. Flood knows this area very well, and he expertly guides the reader through the bewildering, and often contradictory world of Hindu philosophy and theology. I feel that this book would work best if read along with a book that focused more on Hindu religious practice.

In 2014 he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy. In November 2015, it was announced that Doctor Flood would become the inaugural Yap Kim Hao Professor of Comparative Religious Studies at Yale-NUS Grad. Medical School College in Singapore. Taking up the position from January 2016.
