This volume explores the supernatural side of the Prairie State, with stories on the horrors of an old slave house, the numerous spirits of Alton's McPike Mansion, the cemetery where the dead walk, the Spring Valley Vampire, the ghosts of the Bartonville Asylum, Chicago's famous Resurrection Mary, and the spirit world of Abraham Lincoln.

Haunted Illinois - Troy Taylor. Many have wondered what makes a state like illinois so haunted. If pressed to pick a single thing most responsible for the ghosts that apparently dwell here, it would be the history of the state itself. Hauntings are believed to be created from violence and bloodshed. One of the longest sections in the book is devoted to Chicago and he goes into lots of history for Resurrection Mary and who she might be from up there. Many of the stories are more of a history lesson as opposed to a ghost story, or local urban legend.

As a native of Southern IL, I was very excited when I saw this book being offered for free on the Kindle. My home region is one often overlooked (and yes, my little rural self has hear the "Wait...there's more Illinois south of Interstate 80???" many times haha!), despite being a hotbed for fascinating historical accounts and possibly-related unexplained phenomena...but it's the first one the author discusses in this book! I grew up hearing scary stories from a lot of these places, and it's great to get a real historical background on some of these tales.

The writing style of this book is simple (just the facts) which makes the stories even more spine-tingling. I've been to the Old Slave House on a school trip, and refused to go back after the first time because of the eerie feeling I experienced. I also grew up hearing stories about Cave-In-Rock, the Enfield monster, and remember them publishing a story in our local paper about the police force seeing and reporting the UFOs. The Native American burial grounds are also everywhere in Southern IL/IN, and we certainly didn't learn about the paranormal side of them on our field trips!

I definitely recommend this book; even if you don't believe in ghosts, the cultural richness and local stories in Illinois are crazy, fun, and fascinating. And if you are a aspiring paranormal explorer, this book will make you want to come visit and hunt for our Sasquatch, or prowl the Ohio river reliving its bloody past.

Being born in Illinois has given me an appetite for interesting tidbits about my home state. Interesting tales that were well researched made this book a very pleasurable read. My only complaint would be that this book was too short. At 144 pages, I thought the author could have included many more of the ghost stories I know have to be out there. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in history, Illinois, or the paranormal.

Found this book to be well written with many very interesting historical stories. Each individual story is a short, quick ready.
It contained some good information, but excluded many of the tales I've heard throughout the years. It could have been a bit more indepth
