David Waines does not feel a need to indulge in speculations regarding the "origins" of Islam, something that mars . Perhaps that is what makes this book one of the better introductions to Islam.

David Waines does not feel a need to indulge in speculations regarding the "origins" of Islam, something that mars Denny's first chapter. Nor does Waines feel the need to defend any parts of Islam. He just tells it straight and this is a great relief. Waines doesn't base Islam on the "five-pillars" which in reality are not theological pillars in Islam at all but just ethical pillars of obedience. Waines digs into Islamic theology, which is the best 'introduction' to Islam. Waines looks at the history of the schools of Islamic theology and explains well their origins.

Islam was a widespread religion in the Iberian Peninsula, beginning with the Umayyad conquest of Hispania and ending (at least overtly) with its prohibition by the modern Spanish state in the mid-16th century and the expulsion of the Moriscos in the early 17th century, an ethnic and religious minority of around 500,000 people. Although a significant proportion of Moriscos returned to Spain or avoided expulsion through various means, the practice of Islam had faded into obscurity by the 19th century.

The wars in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Israel, and the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, have raised global awareness of Islam at a superficial level - but little has been written which considers Islamic political and military extremism in relation to mainstream Muslim history and theology

An Introduction to Islam David Waines Cambridge Academ .
