Live in a Better Way book

Live in a Better Way book. Teachings from the Dalai Lama are presented here as transcribed lectures presented at dharma celebrations in New Delhi. With that urgent disclaimer established, I have to declare this book utterly unreadable. I am genuinely intrigued by His Holiness and I have the utmost respect for him, both as a leader of faith and as a representative of his genuinely repressed Tibetan people. I bought a used audio cassette edition of this book and play it when I run errands in my 2001 Toyota Corolla with its original equipment tape player. Regardless of the driving conditions, the friendly Buddhist teachings of the Dalai Lama help to keep me calm and happy. His lessons are simple and straightforward and are open to include not only Buddhists but anyone interested in bringing a little more peace into their life. His discussion of his own analytical meditation practice is not particularly esoteric or mystical. The Dalia Lama offers down-to-earth advice for gaining insight into our lives as well as dealing with thoughts and experiences as we go about everyday work and play. Those wanting to move deeper into Buddhist meditation traditions may progress to other books and other teachers. But for some listeners the brief lessons offered in this audio book are a good way to start and may be sufficient to the day. As I drive around town, I never tire of listening to the Dalai Lama's teachings. This is classic Tibetan Buddhist wisdom offered in a gentle way.

This is a suprisingly deceptive book, deceptive in its depth, breath and scholarship. HH the dalai lama has been recorded and transcribed profusely, yet much of what he says comes off as fresh, and worth repeating. This is a series of lectures thah hh dalai lama gave in new dehli over a period of a few years. there is an essential introduction given by lama thubten zopa rinpoche, that illuminates the historical context of the talks, and further explains the backround of Tibetan Buddhism. Then we get to the talks themselves, from Transforming the mind to how to live and die in a better way[my personal favorite of this group},all of which encompass learning and compassion. This is not as easy a read as ,say THE ART OF HAPPINESS, though in many ways the rewards are much deeper. The simplicity is not simplistic, which is a rather neat trick.Read it slowly, savor it, and I have found, as with any such text, the rewards are great.Life affirming and a profound blessing.

It might be a little dense here and there, but this book is uplifting and inspiring. Must read. Highly recommend.

I guess I should have looked closer at the author of this book because (come to find out) this book was not written by The Dalai Lama himself but are instead mere reflections of his teachings written by a monk. Usually this wouldn't bother me, however this monk seems to have a very negative outlook on life in general. The author also seems to beat around the bush on a lot of subjects and doesn't really come to a point. I would definitely prefer to have read a book by His Holiness instead of someone else's musings and interpretations of them.
"Pay attention not only to the cultivation of knowledge but to the cultivation of qualities of the heart, so that at the end of education, not only will you be knowledgeable, but also you will be a warm-hearted and compassionate person."
That's merely a brief excerpt from this book filled with whimsical and charismatic anecdotes from His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. The book is in effect a decade's collection of teachings he has given throughout his life, condensed into a book for our benefit. This collection of talks he gave in the 90's plainly lays out his viewpoint about how to follow the pathway of one's inner self. This is one of those books that you know you won't be able to put into practice flawlessly, but there are things here you will discover that can help you feel better about how you are living and benefit others.
