Gary Gore opens Navigating Change with a description of "the Crucible," a military metaphor for that place in the soul where a person's experiences press against his fundamental will to survive. Hence, Gore's metaphor for his book as a field guide. Gore looks to a variety of motivational sources for insights on how to approach a realm where how we react tells us more about ourselves than we're prepared to know.

In Navigating Change, W. Gary Gore provides a succinct and common-sense path to follow in learning to lead self and, as a result, others. He draws upon the metaphor of a map and compass to communicate the absolute necessity of aligning ourselves with our desired destination and having an incremental plan to get there. Gore tells us that our life is a journey of navigating circumstances and obstacles over which we have little or no control. The only control we really have in life is how we choose to respond to those circumstances. He passionately puts forth the ethos of 100% Responsibility as a basis for living our lives and leading our self.

Of course the messages in the book are sound and rooted in morals from the Bible and even 12-step programs and common sense. There was nothing new at all that I hadn't heard, and I was hoping for more concrete insights rather a repackaging of familiar principles reduced to euphemistic tips. One big deja vu.

I read this book as a resource for a talk I was giving on the subject of change. It was very helpful to me and I was able to apply the ideas to the concept of change within the human person and also within a business organization. Everyone can benefit from reading this book.
