Most public aquariums have plaques, posters, or interactive multimedia displays that inform you at a shallow level about the aquatic life you are looking at. The writing in this book reminds me of that, albeit more in-depth. If you're looking to learn a lot about some particular variety of octopus, you'll probably be disappointed, but it's a good breadth-first overview of life in the ocean.

The pictures and/or photo printing process left something to be desired. I expected higher-quality photos / photo printing from an MIT Press book.

Gorgeous underwater color photos by Seapics.com provide a vivid accompaniment to Paul Horsman's lovely Out Of The Blue: A Journey Through The World's Oceans. This is a focus on the drifters - the creatures which are the ocean's life force - and describes a range of such animals, from turtles and whales to coral reefs and fish. Each ecosystem and its habitats are surveyed with plenty of detail, including consequences of human threat, emphasizing on how all ocean elements are interconnected - and fragile. Out Of The Blue holds plenty of science and plenty of color: it's designed to invite the non-specialist general reader to learn about ocean ecology - and it succeeds well, promising to reach all age ranges in the process with its lively text, science, and stunning color.
