The first time he’d pulled his mobile out of his pocket, he could still hear Kier moving about.

The first time he’d pulled his mobile out of his pocket, he could still hear Kier moving about. So he’d pressed cancel, dropped the phone back into his pocket, and headed for the kitchen ater and half an hour later, the top floors of the house were silent. He’d stood at the bottom of the stairs, listening, then passed silently into the living room and almost dialed again. It was ethics, that time, hanging desperately onto that last thread of integrity, that stopped him. He’d sworn silently, put the phone on the coffee table, and paced.

Lucia (Run Among Thorns) pens some laughable prose (œShe was pretty and she was afraid. Was she still pretty?) and scants the real world details that should bolster a tale of international intrigue, but her solid romantic plotting mostly manages to carry the book. The hero rounds up help (from the previous book Run Among Thorns), and gallantly rides off to the Sahara to rescue his lady, who has shed her mouse persona, and has already rescued herself hah! PROS: It's not your common Harlequin book. This one is defiantly a step above.

A harrowing trio of murder, romance, and power propel the action forward in this story about little Jenny Waring. In a moment of dire crisis, she did something exceptional, and the authorities want to know how and why she killed three armed men like a seasoned agent. It's Kier McAllister's job to break Jenny Waring—he's asking a lot of questions, and he isn't asking nicely. However much McAllister thinks he's in control, the balance of power is shifting. Jenny's accusing eyes are starting to hold the whole world for him, and that isn't good—not when the people he works for aren't about to leave her alone. Jenny Waring started out as McAllister's job, how can she become his redemption?

OPINION:
The book doesn't read like a standard Harlequin or the like. It has an independent fresh bold feeling, only slightly tainted by the generic romance book standards. It reads like the author held herself back perhaps.... 20% in the violence/sex scenes.

The novel was not written in `American English'. I'm ethnocentric just like you are, so "Run Among Thorns" does require an adjustment or translation in your processing, but it is well worth it. By the way... a beck is apparently a creek in Scotland, and a jumper is a sweater.

SYNOPSIS:
The heroine foils villains from killing hostages, by turning on almost `superhero' speed and skill, grabbing one of their guns, and killing all the bad guys. Her rescue was caught on surveillance tape. Her instantaneous transformation from hostage to hero was too perfect. It attracted the attention of the CIA. They were convinced she must be a foreign sleeper agent and were determined to get her to confess to espionage.

So, the spooks tried to break her. They even brought in an outside specialist. This was the dark hero. His `speciality' was in creating a Stockholm Situation with the target. Isolating them, and making them depend on him for everything to the point that they break and peel their secrets like a grape.

It's a romance so.... um it's easy to predict where they end up relationship wise.

CONS:
The violent `everyone is trying to kill me thing' is kinda over board, and completely unrealistic.

Unfulfilled story line. Obviously, the heroine's parents and brother are not who she thinks they are, and big bro is some kind of super spy, but despite foreshadowing and relentless teasing about their story lines, we come away from the end of the book with lingering questions and no answers. Apparently this is a set up for book two `Dangerous Lives', which I'm buying today.

Having grown up cutting my reader-teeth on romantic suspense novels by Mary Stewart, I immediately know when I begin reading what will be, for me, a keeper. "Run Among Thorns" opens with grim government agent types reviewing footage of Jenny Waring expertly dispatching her captors during a tense hostage situation. The reader senses the appalling skills exhibited by the young woman have tossed her from the frying pan into the fire when we're introduced to Kier McAllister, a master of interrogation and psychological games of terror. McAllister spirits Jenny out of the country and takes her to a secluded cottage in Scotland, where he plans to use every technique available to him to force Jenny to abandon her cover story. The problem is, Jenny isn't an agent, secret or otherwise. She's a young woman with outstanding survival instincts who learned marksmanship at an early age, but when faced with the hard core McAllister, she's hard-pressed to convince him she isn't a product of special training being primed for military action. When McAllister squares off against his captive in a test of wit and will, he gradually concludes Jenny might be no more than the innocent she claims to be. He begins to suspect the agency who hired him has ulterior motives that have nothing to do with scoring Jenny as a new operative . McAllister, who has always taken pride in his work, must now use every survival trick he knows to keep Jenny alive. Fans of romantic suspense will find this novel satisfying because the story focuses on the building relationship between Jenny and Kier; the special operative/secret government agency theme forms a backdrop, but the story is really about the developing rapport between the two main characters. On the strength of this debut novel, I'm looking forward to the author's next release, "Dangerous Lies."

This book grabbed me right from the start and kept my interest right to the end. It has a satisfying ending too, not a cliffhanger. I like books that wrap up the story instead of leaving you frustratedly awaiting a sequel.

I liked the characters a lot. I think that Jenny's attraction to Kier could have been better developed instead of just there, but then uncontrolled intense attraction seems quite popular in romance novels. So many readers may not be brothered by it. The storyline has plenty more action to it, and I was tempted to give it 5 stars. However, there was nothing life changing or mind altering about. It was simply very entertaining to read.
Legend 33
I enjoyed this read immensely. Once into it I literally read right through to the end! At the very beginning I was distracted by a contradiction in scenes. Several people are on their knees in a parking lot, hands behind their backs and threatened by three men with weapons. As the scene progresses, one victim "covers her ears with her hands", one "lays an arm over another's shoulders to comfort", and one grabs the gun of one of the perps and shoots the bad guys. Except for stumbling over that, the rest of the book was well written. Loved the ending... and the other ending :D

Poor Jenny Warring is in the wrong place at the wrong time. What can one do when the US government is sure you are a spy or a terrorist? What do you do when powerful people are trying to break you? Jenny ends up as a captive, while a top man uses psychological, mental and physical circumstances to "get the truth" from her.

Two people are left alone together for days on end. Will Jenny fall in love with her captor? If she does, is it Stockholm Syndrome?
This is an inexpensive "romantic suspense" "love story" that I enjoyed. The writing style was a pleasure to read.

This is a book "where ordinary people do extraordinary things, where they experience wild adventures and face up to risk, temptation and death." This is a direct quote describing the kind of books Ms. Lucia likes to write and this book certainly lived up to this standard.
I couldn't put the book down and read it all in one day, staying up way too late for a work night. Buy the book, read and enjoy!
