I know it sounds pathetic, but I don’t really know what’s going on in men’s minds. Yes, of course I like Mr Mountsorrel. I think he enjoyed talking to me, but who else was there for him to talk to? In 1865, Robina Drummond is invited by the Penicuiks to stay in the Scottish Highlands. Nearby, the Invershiels are expecting the eligible Edward Mountsorrel – a man Beatrix Penicuik wants for her pretty daughter. Robina is a sprat to catch a mackerel, for she is on the Invershiels’ visiting list – and the Penicuiks are not. Love, however, can be unpredictable.

Humphrey Hawksley Books. Humphrey Hawksley is author of international thrillers and non-fiction analysis. I have always had a soft spot for the Summer of Love era of the late Sixties and Seventies and devoured many books enveloping the music, design, art and rebellion of that era. In sheer breadth, insight and story-telling, none comes close to Head Shot by Victoria Nixon, a girl from Barnsley in Yorkshire with a close but troubled family, who became a model and the Daily Mail’s face of 1968.

In 1865, Robina Drummond is invited to spend the summer with the Penicuiks in the Scottish Highlands. Their neighbors are expecting an eligible bachelor that they want for their daughter, and Robina is on their visiting list. They think Robina, being poor, thirty-two and only passably attractive, is on the shelf. But love is unpredictable . . .
Found this book by accident and agree with all that the 2006 reviewer wrote although I have given the book 5 stars. It has an intriguing (if a bit well used) plot, good characters, humor, charm, good dialogue, several rascally characters and a lot of good ones as well. I can recommend this to folks who love a good read, or to read about Scotland, or an engaging humorous romance.
HIGHLAND SUMMER is a very good novel, and is not a trashy romance, although it is very romantic. The plot revolves around Robina Drummond, who has been summoned by her haughty cousin, Beatrix, to the Scottish Highlands for the summer. Robina is no pushover and is independent, being employed as a ladies' companion, and decides to come to Scotland in order to revisit the area where she was brought up. Again and again, Robina calmly (and sometimes unconsciously) thwarts Beatrix's plans, a) by being too attractive for a spinster; b) by refusing to be matched with a shifty vicar, and finally, by falling in love with Edward Montsorrel, the man that Beatrix wants for her own daughter. (Beatrix unfortunately does not realize that her daughter is in love with the noble but nearly penniless younger son of their neighbor.)

Edward, meanwhile, returns Robina's feelings but has to work out issues regarding his unfaithful, unmourned late wife.

In the mix of this story is that of Mary, the innocent ex-mistress of Beatrix's callous husband, and her son Jamie, who, while on his way to university, decides he would like to meet his father...

Great background research; use of the very specific Victorian-era values, romance and humor mixed with pathos, makes HIGHLAND SUMMER a lively novel and a very good read. It starts a little clumsily, but quickly becomes a page-turner. Recommended!
