I could not recommend this book any higher! Being able to tell that he had to go to the bathroom, before he could speak was worth the cost of the book alone.

26 April 2016 at 13:45. It was amazing to me to start understanding HOW MUCH little people understand, but simply cannot express themselves and their needs clearly. Through the use of Garcia's book, our communication opened up, Marcus's needs were more easily met, and the quality of "Mommy & me" and "family time" improved dramatically. Learn how to sign with your babies!

I recieved this kit as a present when my son was two months old, and started using a core set of signs pretty soon afterwards. The video is very useful for picking up a few quick signs to memorize. Gabriel showed that he recognized the signs starting around 4 months - before he recognized most of the associated words. For example, if you showed him "milk" when he was hungry, he would get all excited! It was very cute. Signing "more" would calm him a bit when he was clamoring for more food, etc.
He is now 9 months old, and has just started using some of the signs himself, most notably "up", "more", and "hop" (it's how he asks to get into the baby jumper).
I would say this was very useful and fun, and did not cost much effort on our part. I think that two underplayed benefits of baby signing are: 1) the baby understanding you a long time before s/he can talk back and 2) the ability you for you and your spouse to communicate silently about the baby (i.e. asking your spouse to "change" the kid, without having to shout it across the room).
I am looking forward to much more "chatting" with my baby as he gets better hand control and learns more signs....

I had a little trouble staying awake through the video because the dialogue is slow and repetitive, but I actually think that this process made me understand the principles better. You could get away with learning the signs from just the book, but I think the video forced me to see the bigger picture of the usefulness of signing, and the kids on the video were darn cute! I started showing signs to my daughter at 10 months, and sure enough, one month later, she was signing "eat," "more," and "all done." It is such a JOY to see her signing that she wants to eat!

I started in on this with Kayla at 8 months. She looked at me like I was nuts for about 6 weeks. And like most kids, she signed for more, food and milk at about 6 wks. after I first introduced signs to her. I really liked the pull-out chart, but the video left me pretty cold. Boring. The book is alright, but for the price, it should be tabbed with the most common signs you use, for quick reference. I, like a lot of other reviewers, agree it is overpriced. I would expect to pay less for a product like this. It is a shame to be taken advantage of, especially being a new parent and having lots of extras to purchase upon starting your family. Overall, this is a good product, but, a lower price would have me giving this 4 stars, instead of 3.*

*For a price of under $20, I give this 5 Stars.

Fantastic book, with useful tips and tricks, it really helped to be able to communicate, and within no time, our boy had over 80 words of sign language that really made our lives a lot easier. I could not recommend this book any higher!

Being able to tell that he had to go to the bathroom, before he could speak was worth the cost of the book alone......

This is ancient. Do not purchase. I don't even know anyone who owns a VHS player, nor that subscribes to this mantra of learning. Total rip-off!

I used this system with my now 21 month old. It made parenting from 12-18 months a breeze. It is worth the effort to see your child communicate. My son signed complete sentences, like "Where are my shoes?" at 13 months. It has not delayed his speech - in fact he is well ahead for his age. Watch the video twice through and you will learn all the basic signs. Use the book as a reference guide. I plan to teach my next child signing too!

I received this with VHS tape. I no longer have a VHS player. Who does?
My son was getting increasingly frustrated with us at 12 months. He would grit his teeth, tense up his arms, and scream at us when we didn't understand what he wanted or what we did to frustrate him.
We started using the signs in this book and his frustration went away. He really only signs "more" back to us, but somehow he realizes we are communicating on a deeper level.
This has been a lifesaver for us.
