I was really happy, that by the end of this book, I had already done the majority of everything Skip suggests to do in order to become a successful writer. In my area of writing that is. He covers many different writing mediums and most of them I wasn't interested in it. But the parts that did intrigue me such as writing and selling novels, covering research in the horror and fantasy scene, writing short stories, selling poetry, had very good tips that thrilled me to know that I have done most of them or plan to do those exact things. This book also covers a few things I might want to consider in the future such as turning a novel into a script. And it covers how to deal with people who will help you make these things happen such as agents, publishers, editors, etc. This is a great book for those wanting to find the right approach to help sell their work.

I wish I had read How to Write What You Want & Sell What You Write six years ago. For anyone who wants to write or who wants to try writing in a different format (i.e. moving from novel to screenplay), then this is a book to read. It isn't comprehensive and it isn't overly simplistic. It simply gives a short series of hints and points to books, organizations and websites that will give you more details. It's a one-stop-shop for basic advice that will help overcome simple mistakes that not many people seem to talk about. I'm very happy to have bought this book.

It has been more than a year since someone gave me this book, asking me what I think of it. Now that I have read it, I wish I had waited another twenty or thirty years to read it.

I received this Skip Press book for Christmas. What happened to my Amazon Wishlist???!!! No wonder Skip's writing books about writing books; my cliche meter broke after page two. It's as if the breakfast cook for the catering company that worked for the production company that helped film Saving Private Ryan piggybacked off that job to hype some product. New writers, struggling writers: there are much better books out there about writing. Don't bite on this one!

This turned out to be a helpful book by a guy who's been through the routine. Good, pragmatic advice.
I was impressed that Skip Press had studied with John Truby, one of the best story structure teachers I've ever met.
Skip, if you read this, I have a question regarding genres. How would you type Kurt Vonnegut or Tom Robbins or Ayn Rand? How would you pitch one of their stories?
