Phrasal verbs are word groups that include a verb combined with a preposition or an adverb. TO THE TEACHER The inspiration for The Ultimate Phrasal Verb Book came about when a student asked me for a textbook to help her learn the meanings of common phrasal verbs. They are used not only as verbs but as nouns, such as comedown, breakup, or showoff. They might also be used as adjectives, such as spaced-out, burned-out, broken-down, and many others. I had nothing to offer. The only textbook focusing on common verbs that I could give her contains not one phrasal verb - it teaches arise but not get up, awake but not wake up, seek but not look for.

As a former ESL teacher, I'm really impressed with this book. It has a wealth of phrasal verbs that would take a student a long time to absorb and get through. It's got practice material, examples, definitions, etc. I would probably only recommend this for advanced students with a high level of comfort in English, or else it could be overwhelming to remember all the nuances of phrasal verbs in English and how slightly different preposition changes paired with a verb can completely change the meanings. I see this as a great way to challenge advanced students who think they know it all...it's the icing on the cake to mastering English by being comfortable with the multitude of phrasal verbs that English native speakers take for granted that non-native speakers know or should know.

Others have aptly described the contents of this book, but I would like to join in the chorus about the book's popularity with students. I taught ESL at the university level for over 20 years and never found a book as popular as this one for the teaching of vocabulary. Now I'm teaching as a volunteer at my church where all of our students are Spanish speakers. Because of the high number of cognates in English and Spanish, many Spanish speakers can adjust their ear a bit, making it possible to recognize those words which we share in common from the Latin heritage of the old Roman Empire and the lingering influence of Latin throughout the Middle Ages. However, they struggle with the Anglo-Saxon component of English vocabulary, which is huge and still the basis of daily conversation in English. This book was actually discovered by one of my students, who is now a U.S. citizen with about ten years of residency here. I hesitantly started using it as in all my years of ESL I never did vocabulary this way, but this book has been a huge hit with all of the students who have seen it. They asked me to order them copies from Amazon and have even asked me to order one for friends who do not attend the class! One woman has a college-age son who has graduated from high school in the U.S. and has attended some college classes. She says he is often hard to motivate where study is concerned, but he loved the book so much he told his mom he wanted to keep it and could she please buy another one for herself! Every week they say how much they are learning from this book. They are assigning themselves homework from the book and sharing with each other what they learned on their own throughout the week. On numerous occasions they have said they have heard their boss use one of these phrases but never knew what it meant before and, thus, regard the book as a lifeline. Despite the long time they have been in the U.S., they were not conciously aware of the phrasal verb concept and, as a result, had been focusing on the lexical word rather than the particle/preposition, which, of course, is what makes the meaning of the word. The hour and a half flies by when we use this book. Once they catch the meaning of the word, they love to share examples from their own lives of incidents where a phrasal verb would aptly express what happened. In short, if you have hesitated with this book because you think it might be dry or unorthdox in methodology, it would certainly at least be worth a try. Every Sunday as I'm driving to the class, I am confident we will have a good lesson with the content of this book.

The choice of this book was based on much research and display of friends. After receiving it, I did an initial reading and just realized that it is an excellent book for students of English. I am creating in my house a small library with textbooks and classic novels, and I believe this book can u help me a lot to improve my English. I had the opportunity to read the edition in Portuguese and now, I am anxious to read the English version. With respect to the delivery to Brazil, was super fast and the book arrived in perfect condition. I recommend buying at amazon for the excellent quality of the bonds and the speedy delivery. Congratulations.

I've been involved in recommending the purchase of this book for several of my tutoring students, and they have all been pleased with its content and the lessons and reviews. With its fifty lessons it is difficult to get through, but I have one student who has had enough hours with me so that we are approaching the end of the book.

For anyone interested in working with phrasal verbs I heartily suggest you use this book.
