I can't say enough good things about Pimsleur in general. Going through the first set of CDs for any language will get you much further than you'd expect given the limited amount of effort you have to put in (all listening and repeating - no books, explicit grammar study, etc.). I had used Pimsleur for Hebrew and Spanish. However, when I recently wanted to learn a little Arabic to welcome new refugees, I tried to be cheap and check out Arabic lessons on CD from our local library. I quit within five minutes on all three of the CD options they had available, because they weren't even close to being comparable to how easily I learned with Pimsleur. I decided I'd rather spend a little money and be productive and am glad I made the purchase.

I think this method is great. (It's also the only language instruction I could find for Eastern Arabic that seemed effective.) I do these while walking to and from the train station, and go through every lesson twice. Once I've learned a word through this method, it is easy to recall and use.

I have to admit that I have taken formal Arabic, so some of the words are already familiar, though they are pronounced a little differently. Although the instructions tell you not to do this, I picture most of the words as they are spelled in Arabic script as I learn them, and when I can find the correct spelling, write it down on an index card. It's hard for me to remember a word unless I can visualize how it looks in print. This may not be true for others.

I have just completed the Comprehensive Eastern Arabic III and I am truly amazed by its results.

Thanks to such a method one manages with practically no effort to speak and read arabic at an intermediate level.

Having previously purchased Comprehensive Arabic I & II (through another online site however) I was looking forward to the III one...I was anything but disappointed.

In the III series, we are being repeated knowledge acquired through the I & II while introduced to a new vocabulary of approximately 500 words.

My only objection: this is not a method to complete within 30 days as by the Pimsleur advertisements. It was sometimes taking me up to 3 days to comprehend a lesson and move on to the following one. Still, this was worth the effort...

Great way to learn Eastern Arabic. We went on to buy the larger CD set

If you like to learn by listening this is the program for you. You just place the cd in and listen to the lesson as often as you like. It is very passive learning, which is what I wanted. No writing, no exams, just listen to conversation and learn.

I have only gotten to lesson 9 so far, but I am retaining a lot of the language and I find myself encouraged whenever I begin a new lesson because I have remembered such a large amount. I would definitely recommend this product to anybody interested in learning Arabic.

Note that these CDs are specifically in the Damascus dialect, ask a native speaker if that dialect will work where you are going. My wife is Syrian from Damascus, and I found these tapes much more useful than the class I took from an Egyptian teacher. The spoken dialects are very different. Now my wife's family is actually understanding the things I say, it's worth every penny.

My guess is that the critical review below stems from trying to use the Eastern Arabic CDs for a trip to Egypt. You have to get the Egyptian CDs to learn the Egyptian dialect. Egyptians struggle to understand my wife, they are probably not going to understand an English speaker trying to speak the Damascus dialect.
The Pimsleur method has been working very well for me so far. It really makes learning foreign languages easy.
