Ydely
I have always loved Astrid Lindgren. But Pippi Longstocking was the only book of hers I had read. Ronia, the Robber's Daughter is for a slightly older audience, 8-12. Ronia has no unnatural strengths, just plenty of natural ones and a personality which exhibits courage, determination, self reliance and loyalty. The story is about two rival robber clans. Ronia's father is the head of one of the clans, and her friend Birk's father is the leader of the other. Ronia meets Birk when his family move into the other, presumably ruined, side of the old castle where Ronia has lived all her life. Birk is the only other child Ronia has ever met and they become close and fast friends unbeknown to their parents. When Ronia's father finds out about the other clans close proximity he is livid and in time he catches Birk and holds him hostage telling Birk's father he will keep Birk in the dungeon until his clan leaves the other side of the castle. Ronia thwarts her father's plan and saves her friend, thereby alienating her father whom she dearly loves. This leads to her and Birk moving out and living for a summer on their own. The winters are cold in Scandinavia and both children know they must come to terms with their parents or die when winter comes. The illustrations by Ilon Wikland are a must! I love this book so much I read it in English, got the German edition just for the pictures and ordered the Swedish language DVD from England with no subtitles even though I don't speak Swedish.
Ce
