That White Gold merely regurgitates Pellow's "memoirs" is even more troubling because Milton enthusiastically adopts the outmoded vocabulary of the era, repeatedly referring in his book to "Christian" slaves and even "Christian" vessels being captured by "Muslim" pirates and sold to "Muslim" masters".

Giles Milton is a writer and journalist. This book, WHITE GOLD, is, simply, mesmerizing reading, as is the author's, Giles Milton's, NATHANIEL'S NUTMEG. He has contributed articles for most of the British national newspapers as well as many foreign publications and specialises in the history of travel and exploration.

Using the firsthand testimony of a Cornish cabin boy named Thomas Pellow, Giles Milton vividly reconstructs a disturbing, little known chapter of history

Using the firsthand testimony of a Cornish cabin boy named Thomas Pellow, Giles Milton vividly reconstructs a disturbing, little known chapter of history. Pellow was bought by the tyrannical sultan of Morocco who was constructing an imperial pleasure palace of enormous scale and grandeur, built entirely by Christian slave labour.

Six gentlemen, one goal: the destruction of Hitler's war machine. When the frozen corpse of Ferris Clark is found in the Greenland ice, forensic archaeologist Jack Raven is hired to investigate. He is suspicious from the outset. In the spring of 1939, a top-secret organization was founded in London: its purpose was to plot the destruction of Hitler's war machine through spectacular acts of sabotage.

Giles Milton (born 15 January 1966) is an British writer who specialises in narrative history. He has written nine works of non-fiction, a thriller, two comic novels and three books for young children.

Dan Neill, The Observer. Extraordinary, eye-opening and most readable revelation of a dark place and shameful episode in our history. Peter Lewis, The Daily Mail. Milton has ingeniously retrieved and polished a hidden nugget from the remarkable treasure house of British history. Tim Ecott, The Guardian.

In White Gold, Giles Milton illuminates the less-well-known history of the Europeans who were captured for the north African slave markets by Barbary pirates. He asserts that there may have been one million such "white slaves" seized from Spain, France, England and even the fledgling American colonies. The "Extraordinary Story of Thomas Pellow" is a lens through which the wider story of the relationship between the emerging European maritime powers and the long-established sultanates of Barbary is told

Six gentlemen, one goal: the destruction of Hitler's war machine In the spring of 1939, a top-secret organization was founded in London: its purpose was to plot the destruction of Hitler's war machine through spectacular acts of sabotage. The guerrilla campaign that followed was every bit as extraordinary as the six men who directed it.

This is the forgotten story of the million white Europeans, snatched from their homes and taken in chains to the great slave markets of North Africa to be sold to the highest bidder. Ignored by their own governments, and forced to endure the harshest of conditions, very few lived to tell the tale. As his personal slave, he would witness first-hand the barbaric splendour of he imperial court, as well as experience the daily terror of a cruel regime. Gripping, immaculately researched, and brilliantly realised, WHITE GOLD reveals an explosive chapter of popular history, told with all the pace and verve of one of our finest historians.

I read many books that bring me to tears. This is one of them. It is stunning and so well written it keeps the reader completely engaged and is difficult to put down. It is of constant consternation to me how cruel and inhumane the human animal is. The suffering inflicted by humans on their own kind is truly repugnant. Also of great confusion is the fact that while Barbary Corsairs were enslaving Europeans, Europeans themselves were engaging in slavery to the North America's. The disconnect is one of consternation and while historians can come up with all sorts of reasons, really, in the final analysis none of them make too much sense. Once again we see religion used on all sides and wonder how anyone's God factors into the terrors and tortures of one's fellow humans. Giles Milton has written another winner.

This is a historical narrative of an English lad who was captured and enslaved by the Muslim savages of Morocco. Aside from his own personal story, Toll also gives a very detailed, very chilling, very nauseating background of the systematic enslavement of Christians by the Muslim savages. They would often raid as far north as Holland and Britain and cumulatively, the number of slaves well exceeded over a million.

One of the particularly nauseating aspect of this narrative is that while the Europeans (and Americans) were enslaved in order to do work, they were also just overmistreated so that they dropped like flies and would often be killed on a whim. Reason? They were Christians.

Anything Giles Milton writes one can be sure is well worth reading, and surely well researched.. Incredible factual tale of the kidnappings of Europeans by Barbary Pirates. Over one million Europeans were kidnapped from boats (commercial sailboats with no guns, often), and from coastal towns. These people disappeared into the Islamic world forever. Those kidnapped who after deprivations and terrible mistreatment agreed to accept the Islamic religion fared better than those who didn't. Fascinating reading--I understand these kidnappings went on for a great many, many years, certainly for far more years than America's stint in slavery. Whites were sold at African slave markets, and suffered the indignities and mistreatment that many Africans experienced who were sold into slavery at the coast, often sold by tribesman other than their own. This book, WHITE GOLD, is, simply, mesmerizing reading, as is the author's, Giles Milton's, NATHANIEL'S NUTMEG. A great writer, with well documented research!

Mind blowing read on the white mans slavery. Get rid of the collectivised guilt about the white man being plugged down our throats by the evil propagandists. Wake up and read some real history. If this book doesn't bring you to tears then you are not a human being, you are nothing but a ghost. This is the most profoundly moving book I think I have ever read! No doubt this is one book guaranteed never to be spoken about in this low level political correct infantile culture we are now swimming in.

This is the third account of William Pellow, white slave in North Africa, and by far the one in most detail about others as well. Pellow's own account is also very good. I found this one gave good insight into the history of the slave depredations made by Muslim raiders all along every coast line in Europe for many decades. It also affords an interesting insight into the mind of the Muslim Pasha, or what we would call a warlord today. The fact is, absolutely nothing has changed, and their cruelty today is rooted in a long history of abuse of all who do not share their faith, and of one another as it pleases them. Worth the read for that alone. And yet, quite a number of them escaped, and lived to tell about it.

Amazing book. Should be made into a movie, but in this day and age of suffocating political correctness no-one in Hollywood would touch it.

This story, through contemporary writing of the slave Cornishman, Thomas Pellow, describes the period of the original religious fundamentalism, and the Jihad of the Muslim against the Christian religions, with the corruption and avarice of the Moroccan Sultan Moulay Ismail and the Barbary Corsairs, in raiding, capturing and enslaving their 'white gold'. It was estimated that over a million Europeans were enslaved throughout the Islamic regions with newly kidnapped victims being required at annual rates of twenty of thousands because of attrition through ill treatment, starvation, murder and disease.
This then, is the other side of the coin, the enslavers enslaved. But with incredible brutality, mindless bestiality, torture casual deaths, beheadings and driven by work so hard and unremitting that constant raiding and enslavement of more peoples from the European coast were required. Little intelligence here, none of the, sometimes self-interested and reluctant, care of their investment that modified the treatment of black slaves in the cruel plantations of the Americas. Beheading by the Sultan himself were common, on his whim, whimsy and humour as he drove his millions of captured English, French, Portuguese and even American crews and villagers in constructing his huge city-of-palaces, Meknès-Tafilalet.
Having enjoyed Milton's earlier work of scholarly research Nathaniel's Nutmeg it was no surprise to find such a detailed history of Pellow's twenty three years of slavery. Towards the end of the book a thirst for revenge was satisfied in an ironic connection ... it was a relative Sir Edward Pellew who, in 1816, destroyed the power of the Muslim slavers, releasing the slaves and bringing the 'white gold' trade to an end.
A piece of history often overlooked .
