The inhabitants of Latin America are from a variety of ancestries, ethnic groups and races, making the region one of the most diverse in the world. The specific composition of the group varies from country to country. Many have a predominance of European-Amerindian or Mestizo population; in others, Amerindians are a majority; some are dominated by inhabitants of European ancestry; and some countries' populations have large African or Mulatto populations.

I used this book for Anth/Socl 214, US Racial and Ethnic Minorities. It is more of a pamphlet than a book, really, but provides a decent overview of sociological theories about race and ethnicity in America. I must say, it's one of the most repetitive short books I have read to date.

Gonzales, J. is to provide an academic background for understanding the history, culture, and social relationships that constitute the day-to-day life in ethnic communities. Juan Gonzales believes that education can provide the key to understanding ethnic and racial diversity in American.

Both cooperation and conflict between racial and ethnic groups have .

Both cooperation and conflict between racial and ethnic groups have transformed the social history of America and helped to shape its present form. Many authors (some of whom we will be reading) have gone so far as to argue that the multicultural diversity of the United States is its defining characteristic. Whether or not this is true, understanding the dynamics of racial and ethnic contact in an American context is crucial for those aspiring to understand the broader sociological picture of the United States.

Excerpt from the Preface: One of the primary objectives of this book is to provide an academic background for understanding the history, culture, and social relationships that constitute the day-to-day life in ethnic communities. The hope is that with an exposure to some basic facts about American ethnic groups that people will arrive at a new level of understanding and cooperation. It is my belief that education can provide the key to understanding ethnic and racial diversity in American society and that such an understanding will promote greater tolerance and acceptance of cultural diversity.

Interesting read! I bought this for my ethnic studies class, and it provides detailed explanations of the various races that came to America and what their experience was like!

I felt this book was not very informative. There would be Headings for a particular topic, and the instructor would ask questions for an assignment regarding that topic. There would only be 2 or 3 paragraphs for that particular topic, and it hardly gave the info needed. I don't think it was put together very well. Many places it would say things like "the top 5 reasons for. . . " and you would have to search and search and search (instead of having them numbered or written out with tabs, etc).

This book has no place in a classroom nor a personal library. The correct name of this book should be "White Males in America Are Inherently Evil". I truly wanted to learn more about ethic groups, races, cultures and peoples within American, however, this book only displayed hate rallying racism towards those of European decent. I highly recommend to skip this book.
