For such a legendary work, the artwork here was cruder than I expected. The figure drawing is cartoonish and caricatured. The coloring is intense and extreme, lacking both the overt experimentalism of Neverwhere and the subtle charms of Mutant World. The layouts are also rather constrained and boxy-looking. In some ways, this book feels more rooted in Corben's early horror or underground styles than in his fantasy style. Some pages look rushed and even scribbled, while others are simply overwhelmed by the heavy-handed coloring, which obscures the artist's more refined tonal renderings.

Despite this, the story is pretty solid and entertaining. Definitely imaginative. Overall, I'd compare it to an early piece like 'Chard' from Hot Stuf’ magazine. Expand that story to 96 pages, add intense, over-the-top coloring and a tight production schedule, and you get something like 'Last Voyage of Sindbad'.

This graphic novel was originally serialized in 1978-79 and then collected into book form as New Tales of the Arabian Nights (1979). It was reprinted as The Last Voyage of Sindbad (1988) by Catalan Communications. This Catalan edition is printed on flat, uncoated paper. The source appears to be Corben's original color separations, so it's a faithful reproduction of the artist's work and stands toe-to-toe with the first edition. This edition has its advantages and disadvantages, though; it's lighter in tonality, which reveals more of Corben's drawing and media technique, but I prefer the darker, more vivid appearance of the first edition, as it originally appeared in the pages of Heavy Metal.

If 'early Corben' is your thing, go for it; otherwise, I'd suggest Bloodstar, Den, or Mutant World, as I think they're much better works.

I have been a fan of comics since I was a wee lad. Many great artists to be sure, but Richard Corben has always captivated my eyes and heart. As an artist I was blown-away by his sculptural eye, and unique color techniques. No one has ever come close to creating the same style in their characters.

If you don't know Corben from Kirby, this is the best book to become introduced to one of the best, and certainly under-rated comic artists of our generation. If you are a Corben fan, and haven't picked this one up yet, do it now! You will love it!! I am on my second copy now, the first well worn copy I gave to a friend.

this is probably one of the greatest original graphic novels to be released in the past 20 years. Corben's lush, sensual coloring combines with the imaginative story by Strnad that easily stands on it's own along with classic works by Eisler and Moebius.

This is a Second Edition of New Tales Of The Arabian Nights. Same book, different title. Great art, storytelling and that 80's tasty crispness that is absent from most of today's comics. If you grew up in the 1980s, you know what I'm talkin' bout! One of the better Catalan collections.
