Jean Jacques Rousseau was a Swiss philosopher and political theorist .

Jean Jacques Rousseau was a Swiss philosopher and political theorist who lived much of his life in France. Many reference books describe him as French, but he generally added "Citizen of Geneva" whenever he signed his name.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau remains an important figure in the history of philosophy, both because of his contributions to political philosophy and moral psychology and because of his influence on later thinkers. Rousseau's own view of philosophy and philosophers was firmly negative, seeing philosophers as the post-hoc rationalizers of self-interest, as apologists for various forms of tyranny, and as Jean-Jacques Rousseau remains an important figure in the history of philosophy, both because of his contributions to political philosophy and moral psychology and because of his influence on later.

Taking Rousseau's Le Devin du Village as one narrative centrepiece .

The book will serve as an essential resource for scholars and graduate students interested in Rousseau, Bambini’s bouffons troupe, and operatic practice during the Ancien Régim. massive achievement.

Gretry: Richard Coeur De Lion, Rousseau: Le Devin du Village. You could make a few criticisms of the performance: Doneux is better conducting the forthright music, as he can be rhythmically unyielding in the more lyrical moments; as Blondel, Michel Trempont is occasionally gruff (but it could be argued this is not inappropriate to the role); the chorus could do with a bit more presence.

Perhaps Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Devin du Village has been waiting just for you for two centuries at the Theatre .

Perhaps Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Devin du Village has been waiting just for you for two centuries at the Theatre de la Reine at the Petit Trianon. On September 19, 1780, Marie-Antoinette was on stage, in costume, and was acting with her troop of aristocrats in front of a public of close friends. That exceptional evening, a veritable fantasy of the Queen’s who imagined that she was a shepherdess, has been resuscitated under the direction of Sebastien d’Herin in a costumed reconstitution, staged in the original historic sets. A bonus film of the complete performance accompanies this recording.

Bludsong
A good recording with lovely vocalists of a performance aiming at authenticity. Another reviewer comments on the profuse addition of grace notes. Rousseau would have expected no less. But the orchestration is also embellished with additional French horn lines. The accompanying notes justify this as historically appropriate. The result is artistically effective but might be less useful for purchasers searching for a recording that sticks strictly to Rousseau's score. The accompanying notes in English, French, and German provide helpful information about Rousseau and the controversy about Italian influences. They also provide parallel translations of the words (but not stage directions, etc.) I have not heard the other version that is available on cd, but this is a fine performance, useful for either educators or music buffs. Rousseau fans should give it a listen to understand how traditional the revolutionary philosopher was at heart.

I am listening to this music on the Amazon Cloud Player. I had a vocal score to determine how many grace notes were being added to the composition by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. I had played the basic melodies on the piano, so hearing how orchestrated the music is in performance was mainly what I noticed the first time I listened to it. Many years ago I listened to this kind of music, but I can't think of anything to compare it to because none of it struck me as being distinct. The opera Le Devin Du Village was first performed in 1752 when Rousseau was 41 and too set in his ways to think he could become good buddies with King Louis XV as the king was singing these songs. On the French language used in this opera, Rousseau wrote:

there is neither time nor melody
in French music because the language
is not capable of either:
French song is a continuous bark,
its harmony crude and suggestive
of the work of a student.
French airs are not airs at all,
nor French recitatives worth anything. (Music in History/The Evolution of an Art (1940, 1949) by Howard McKinney and W. R. Anderson, n. 2, pp. 396-397).
