The Big Bands Songbook book. Details (if other): Cancel.

I found the book The Big Bands by George T. Simon and it detailed so many bands that I did not know, and what a fantastic history book it is. I feel that the book should be re-printed, and possibly updated. I found the book in the 70's, in my library, and it has taken 40 years to get a copy which I now have in my posetion. This book occupied a prime spot on my fathers bookshelf while I was growing up. I frequently heard this music as a kid, and was intrigued by its swing and feel. I had the pleasure of befriending George Simon, and found him to be a first class gentleman. I visited him at his home, and we would discuss the music and his experiences.

Simon Thomas George Music. Howdy Folks! Here's my page for information on all of my bands, shows, and recordings! See you out there.

George is a grumpy steamroller whose interactions with engines generally lead to trouble. He is owned by the Sodor Island Council. George immediately entered a conflict with the engines of the Skarloey Railway in 1960, while he was assisting with road widening works near Cros-ny-Cuirn. At the time, Sir Handel was boasting about his broad tyres, which the other engines referred to as "steamroller wheels". Skarloey tried to trick Sir Handel into confronting George to divert his attention

Mr. Simon gives great background on the big and not so big swing bands. I read the hardback version way back in the early 1980's. His personal relationship with many of the leaders and musicians gave him a front row seat to many live shows. As a writer for Downbeat he had access to anyone and everyone that played in that great era of American music. He played drums also so the musicians felt at ease with "one of their own" so inside interviews of the band leaders from their musicians really adds color to each bands review. Another great book by George T. Simon is his book on Glenn Miller whom was a personal friend to Mr.Simon.
If you are a fan or just curious about the big band era this book is a must!

Just what I wanted. I read to my 97-year-old mother and finding appropriate material is important. She was a young married during the WWII years. I was born while Dad was overseas. This book reminders her of the music she loved during her early-married life.

This can be used as a coffee table book or for making music. Former Metronome magazine journalist Simon was a firsthand witness to the Big Band Era and heard, knew all the participants, interviewing many of them. He put that background to splendid use in this music folio, providing background information on the songs and those who made them famous. I once panned a music trivia book Simon wrote, but he knocked it out of the park with this. Bravo!!!!

This book was recommended to me when I was looking for a compilation of songs from the 30s and 40s, and I'm really happy with it. The best feature, from my point of view as a performer, is that there's an informative description (often a page to a page and a half) about each song -- telling information about the composers, the singers who made it famous, etc. It's the kind of info that can help us give the song meaning, for ourselves and our audiences. Great compilation of favorites of the WWII generation!

I bought this book for my grandpa with dementia because it helps him remember his childhood and all the music he enjoyed. He loves the stories, detail, and pictures.

Anyone interested in this period owes a large debt to George T. Simon (who, sadly, isn't around to collect it) My (used) copy was filled with newspaper clippings of obituaries of musicians from these bands. I wish the publisher would re-print this incredible resource or let someone else print it.

I'm of an age--he said creakily--to remember most of these being played regularly; so they're imprinted in that wonderful archive between the ears.
I play guitar and keyboard...and wanted a collection on these jewels that I can grab quickly. It's
got great lead sheets, great pix and background writing.
If you like big band, swing and some of the greatest lyrics of all time--this is for you.

You don't read such a book as you read a novel. You sometime look at it to learn about this specific band you just listened or the life and music of this jazzman you like very much. Nevertheless there is always stories behind them and Simon is very good to tell you about anecdotes and specialist's comments such as Leonard Feather, John Hammond or Joe Glaser...
