lets go baby
I've been at music for 50 years this August, 2013, and love recording at home, producing my wife's and my own songs and instrumentals. I love that I can learn anything that Sonar X2 will do from Scott Garrigus' SONAR X2 Power!: Comprehensive Guide. A friend called me a "power user", at a recording workshop and I said, if that's true, it's because I read and have read Scott's Sonar Power books for the past 10 years.
If you want to learn Sonar X2, or any earlier version, these Power books are your best option. I am moving from Sonar 5.2PE to Sonar X2 and without Scott's book, I would be completely lost! I read mine everyday and refer to it while working on tracks, constantly. This is the Sonar user's Bible! Anything you wish to know is easy to find and read through. These Power books of Scott's are thorough and utterly useful, well, "required" is more like it! Get one and trust you are on your way to becoming a Power User- a Sonar X2 Power! user!

WAY back in the day (shortly after the dinosaurs took a long vacation), I returned to Cakewalk software for music production. My previous foray had been several years before with their "Home Studio 7", which was actually my introduction to the many nuances of MIDI. In the interim I had used Syntrillium's Cool Edit Pro (which eventually became Adobe's Audition. I used that at home and at the radio station for several years, through numerous "upgrades".)

When I purchased Sonar 4, I discovered a website called DigiFreq, run by a man named Scott Garrigus. On the site, I found he had compiled a book called "Sonar 4 Power", billed as the ultimate tutorial to the power of Sonar's program. I took the leap and ordered the book. Without it, I might never have gotten into the rich complexities of Sonar.

Scott takes a clear, step-by-step approach to teaching the various elements of Sonar. He assumes you know a LITTLE about DAWs and audio production, but provides enough background to enlighten the newbies (without ever talking down to you).

I have purchased each consecutive publication, since Scott concentrates on new features and additions as much as he does going over previous ground. Each new edition can stand on its own, but is even more helpful if you already have a working knowledge of previous editions of the Sonar programs.

If you are just getting into Sonar X2, you can spend days viewing the specific video tutorials on YouTube (search for Karl Rose for starters, known on the Cakewalk forum as fastbikerboy), and you can spend your money on the Cakewalk-approved videos available through their online store. But, for me, there is nothing quite like having a hard copy you can flip through and quickly find the information you are looking for. I have learned most of what I know about Sonar through Scott's intelligent and informative books that I highly recommend them to anyone who REALLY wants to become a Sonar "power user".

Scott really knows his stuff... and imparts that knowledge in an easy-to-digest way that will have you up and running quickly.

This is the third Sonar Power book I've bought (Sonar 4, 7 & of course X2). Love these books for helping me navigate my way around my recording tasks (you just look up your query's page number in the index & Mr. Garrigus walks you through the process step by step. I actually purchased this a couple weeks before my actual X2 DAW arrived - and would sit in bed with a nightlight educating myself on specifically: recording softsynths (something I never tackled in the previous versions). Highly Recommended!

Sonar X2 Power! is another solid book on the use, structure and power built into Sonar X2. The author, Scott Garrigus, is a musician and uses Sonar in his own studio. A new user will find an easy to read book that explains the software and gets right into how it can be customized for the individual. Existing users, especially versions thru 8.5, can jump into the new features that are part of X2 which Scott lays out in detail to get up to speed.

Sonar was the first DAW to take advantage of 64 bit computing a number of years ago as well as other features just now being introduced by other brands. It is built on CAL, or Cakewalk Application Language, and one chapter explains the code and how to customize your workflow.

Scott rates a 5 star review as the book is completely up to date with version X2a. You can't find a better book on Sonar.

I have several SONAR power books by Scott R. Garrigus covering several releases of Sonar. I started with Sonar 8.5 and progressed through X1 and now X2. Each time I upgraded Sonar I wound up getting the next Sonar Power book for it's great explanations of the new features and functionality of each Sonar release. I am a music/recording enthusiast who has a full time job not related to the music field. So in my free time to indulge my passion I would rather spend on music/recording. While Sonar the DAW has mounds of information in it's help files, readme files, Installation Guide, user Guide, forums etc. It is not structured with a instructional workflow mindset but more of a reference feel.

The SonarX2 book walks you through major aspects of Installing, Configuring and Efficiently using SonarX2. The style of writing is clear and instructive with a very practical approach to explaining SonarX2 and all of its features and possible uses.

I keep the book right on the desk in my recording studio and find it a great help when I have a "Uh, now how do I do this?" moment.

Scott's style of writing and the organization of the book by logical tasks makes it a great instruction resource. Also, Scott provides a number of pointers/references to get more detailed information throughout the book. Very helpful.

User Level: new to intermediate (Cant speak to advanced users I am intermediate)
Ease/clarity of use: 9 out of 10
Long term Value: 9 out of 10 (I have referred back to the book many times)
