The Golden Age of Radio, also known as the old-time radio (OTR) era, was an era of radio programming in the United States during which radio was the dominant electronic home entertainment medium. It began with the birth of commercial radio broadcasting in the early 1920s and lasted through the 1950s, when television gradually superseded radio as the medium of choice for scripted programming, variety and dramatic shows.

Growing up the waning years of the golden age of gospel radio I was fascinated by wealth of stories about the songs, the writers and composers as well as the preachers that profoundly impacted so many lives for the glory of God. Starting as a church planter in Utah who was given the privilege of managing a Christian non-com in Utah for 20 years there was so much in the desires and dreams of these pioneers that I connected with. The author's analysis of the changes in the Christian broadcast environment thru the years was right on target. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and only wish I could have read it before beginning my ministry in radio. It is a great resource of material on the stories of many great old gospel hymns and what led to their writing. Those stories make those great old songs even more precious.

Interesting synopsis of the source of popular hymns and gospel songs from the early to middle 20th century. But much more than a survey of music history, this book gives the reader an important look at the pioneering of radio broadcasting by fundamental Christians as well as a study of the fundamentalist/evangelical resurgence that came after the fundamentalist/modernist conflict. The losses conservatives suffered are often emphasized as liberals or modernists took control of the mainline denominations. It has been observed
that "Fundamentalists lost the furniture." But what is often overlooked is the amazing network of churches, schools, camps, mission agencies, publishing houses, and broadcast programming that emerged in the early and middle 20th century. Some have even suggested that this era may have been a third great Awakening. Mark Ward's book contains a partial history of this time showing the role of evangelists, broadcasters, and musicians in this movement. A very interesting read.

If you grew up in the 1950 and 1960 listening to Christian radio you will find this book bringing back many memories. I purchased this book as part of a research project and found the contents of this book very helpful. This is one of the best books on radio and music history that I have read.

I'm a little late in reviewing this, but am re-reading this fascinating book after reading it for the first time a few years back. If you're interested in the early broadcasters and pioneer preachers of Christian radio, the great gospel songwriters of the forties, fifties, and sixties, and the golden age of gospel quartet singing, this book is for you. Even the struggle back in the forties between conservatives and liberal theological factions is covered. All in all, you're in for over 300 pages of truly comprehensive and supremely interesting twentieth century evangelical history.
