I was walking through the aisles of the library and found this gem. I read it and returned it. Years later I had to re-read it and was forced to hunt it down on the web as its out of print. I call it a gem because you definitely have to find it on your own and is well worth the effort.

The Merry Men and Other Tales and Fables (1887) is a collection of short stories by Robert Louis Stevenson. The title derives from the local name given to a group of waves in the title short story, not from the Merry Men of Robin Hood tales. The Merry Men. Will O' the Mill. The Treasure of Franchard.

Nothing but the great motionless ice fields around us, withtheir weird hummocks and fantastic pinnacles. There is a deathly silenceover their wide expanse which is horrible. No lapping of the waves now,no cries of seagulls or straining of sails, but one deep universalsilence in which the murmurs of the seamen, and the creak of their bootsupon the white shining deck, seem discordant and out of place. It is acurious thing that in whaling vessels the Church of England Prayer-bookis always employed, although there is never a member of that Churchamong either officers or crew. Our men are all Roman Catholics orPresbyterians, the former predominating.
