Likewise, the ongoing influence of European Vision and the South Pacific has seen Smith claimed as a foundational .

Likewise, the ongoing influence of European Vision and the South Pacific has seen Smith claimed as a foundational figure in . post-colonial scholarship, as one who ‘anticipated’ aspects of Edward Said’s late-1970s analysis of orientalism. But while there are important parallels and overlaps in the thinking of this pair, their differences and divergences are at least as significant. Tracing the relationship between Marxism and Darwinism in Bernard Smith’s writing, the article unpacks the meaning of Smith’s claim that ‘it is the business of the art historian to reveal tendencies’. While Smith tended towards Marxism his writing is not about Marxist tendencies in art.

With this book, art historian Bernard Smith established the model for all future considerations of the reception of the South Pacific by Europeans, as manifested in artistic impressions and interpretations of the early explorers and settlers of the region. In a way, you could say that Smith's ideas establish the discourse of 'postcolonialism' long before such a word was used. Essential reading for anyone interested in Pacific studies. 2 people found this helpful.

BORN IN Sydney in 1986, Bernard Smith is today widely considered to be Australia's preeminent art historian and a major cultural theorist. While working as a school teacher and artist during the late 1930S and early 1940s, he came under the influences of surrealist aesthetics and communist politics, especially as mediated by refugee intellectuals from Hitler's Europe. His most acclaimed achievement, however, is European Vision and the South Pacific 1768-1850: A Study in the History of Art and Ideas, first published in 1960 and a work that has continued to grow in stature and influence in the four decades since its original appearance.
