Jan 22, 2019 JAMES L HALL rated it it was amazing. Shelves: sword-and-planet. If you are an Edgar Rice Burroughs fan, this is a must-have book. Born September 1, 1959, exactly 84 years after Burroughs," Jusko channels Edgar in each work of art. Jusko in conjunction with ERB, Inc. reportedly will be creating new cover art and frontispieces for every Edgar Rice Burroughs Novel; the first time completed by one artist. Topping the Masterpieces in this collection will be a high bar.

Joe Jusko (/ˈdʒʌskoʊ/; born September 1, 1959) is an American artist known for his realistic, highly detailed painted fantasy, pin-up, and cover illustrations, mainly in the comic book industry.

by Joe Jusko, Dantion Burroughs, Edgar Rice Burroughs. First I want to say Jusko's a great artist who easily captures Burroughs' vivd prose in this book. All of the paintings are gorgeous and well done and stand out in my mind. I do, however, have a couple of quibbles.

Joe Jusko is undoubtedly one of the best known Fantasy, Pin-Up and Comic Artists in the world today. His career has spanned over 30 years, starting with the sale of his very first cover for Heavy Metal Magazine in 1977 at the age of 17. Since graduating that year from NYC's High School of Art & Design, Joe has worked for almost every major comic book publisher, producing hundreds of images for both covers and interiors. His work has appeared on paperback book covers, calendars, posters, t-shirts, toy packaging and innumerable trading cards, most memorably the multi award winning 1992.

First I want to say Jusko's a great artist who easily captures Burroughs' vivd prose in this book. All of the paintings are gorgeous and well done and stand out in my mind. I do, however, have a couple of quibbles. First Synthetic Men of Mars is entirely unrepresented with no explanation given as to why. Second many of the paintings don't match up to the action they purport to describe. For instance O-aa is featured as a brunette with a jalok facing a T-Rex when in fact she is a blonde who's climbing up a cliff alone to escape a Tylosaurus in the scene supposedly painted. Although the picture is beautiful, it doesn't match up to what we should be seeing. These though are relatively minor quibbles, and I think anyone who gets the book won't be disappointed. I hope Jusko does some more ERB artwork, for I enjoyed this greatly.

I was a bit leery about ordering Joe Jusco's book site unseen from Amazon.com. After viewing this beauty, I thank my lucky stars I did order it. It's gorgeous! The book contains the heroic art of E.R.Burroughs' Tarzan, Mars, Venus, and miscellanious stories. Jusco's exquisitely detailed work is hypnotic and the crisp reproductions are first rate, with vibrant colors on very high quality paper. Each picture needs to be studied for long periods to fully appreciate the incredible talent that went into creating it. My advice to Fantasy/SF art collectors is to buy this book now before it goes out of print completely. You'll only pay much more for it later on.
