Mingst is Lockwood Chair Professor at the Patterson School of Diplomacy and International . The book features just about all the basics for the class, so when we need more details we simply refer to the Internet. For 15 dollars you really can't go wrong.

This book is disappointing Mingst gives students the impression that the whole point of IR is trying to decide which of the -isms is the most valid.

This book is disappointing. The book starts with, and then each chapter returns rather clunkily to, the division between liberalists, realists, radicalists, etc. As in: This is the international system and realists. This is war and strife. Mingst gives students the impression that the whole point of IR is trying to decide which of the -isms is the most valid. It would have been much better to take a less theory-laden approach in the early chapters, allowing students to come up with their own etations of things, and then introduce all the -isms in later chapters. Finally, the book is just not very clearly written.

Essentials of International Relations is the best-selling brief text for introductory international relations courses. Professor Mingst's unique framework focuses on the basic concepts and core theories that political scientists use to understand world politics.

Essentials of International Relations is a brief but highly readable introduction to the core concepts in international relations. The author presents the basic tools of analysis-the individual, the state, and the international system-and shows how the primary schools of thought-liberalism, realism, and Marxism-use these tools to evaluate interactions between nations, paying particular attention to security and economic issues. Theory is brought to life with numerous examples and case studies. In addition, the role of international law and the development of international organizations are explored as the author presents a clear and fully developed lens through which the emerging world order can be examined and understood.
