Fundamentals of Abnormal Psychology, Second Edition offers a concise yet substantial introduction to the symptoms, causes and treatments of mental disorders. Comer combines both theory and contemporary social and cultural influences in his analyses, while maintaining scientific precision, clarity and scope. The text comes with a CD-ROM, which offers video case studies, questions, quizzes and web research information.

The book arrived quickly and it was in excellent condition. It's an excellent overview of psychopathology. If you're looking for a book that covers everything in the DSM, this has a couple of omissions (Sleep Disorders for example), but the organization and presentation of the material is excellent. I also used the associated online website with the quizzes and the videos. The videos were very worthwhile. I have a couple of minor gripes about the quizzes: If you get an answer wrong, it tells you it's incorrect but it doesn't tell you what the correct answer is (or why, or where in the text book this is covered). There were a couple of questions in the quiz that I was able to find the answer to online but which I am 99.9% sure are not covered in the related text book chapter. And there are at least two answers in the quizzes that are wrong - or at least, they are inconsistent with the text book. In both cases they related to information that would have been edited in the 6th edition (such as the revised outcome of the Andrea Yates trial). I was using the book and quiz for the 6th edition so I would have expected them to be in synch. However, this is still a 5 star text book for me.

I bought this book because it is an earlier edition of the one required by my class and I could get it for a significantly reduced cost with very little content change. I have really liked the textbook, probably because I really enjoy the class that I'm reading it for. I ordered mine with a little damage for a better price and it is definitely readable and there isn't a lot of limiting damage. It is laid out in chapters and not modules, if anyone is wondering.

Abnormal Psych. by Dr. Comer is without a doubt one of the best textbooks I have ever used. Why? There are a number of reasons.
(1) This book has one author, so therefore the book speaks with one voice. Professors who wish to write books need to heed the adage "too many cooks spoil the soup." I am glad Dr. Comer did because he has written a text that is easy to follow, concept by concept.
(2) With regard to concepts: Many professors write textbooks as if other professors will be reading them. Not Dr. Comer. This text is not only appropriate for the graduate student, the unininitiated will benefit from this book as well. He uses lean prose, simple-to-understand language and synatx.
(3) Dr. Comer's book is very logically structured. He presents each psychopathology, looks at it from each perspective, e.g. psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, existential, etc., then he outlines how each school of thought would deal with the issue. The vignettes sprinkled throughout each chapter are very informative. A nice supplement.
I bought this book in order to get a handle on some of the principles of abnormal psych. before I take a graduate psychopathology course this fall. Not having had abnormal psych at the undergraduate or graduate level, I was looking for a text that would "bring me up to speed," before I start class this fall.
Thanks to Dr. Comer, I'll be ready!

I am renting this book for my collage classes and have found it to be really informative. The book was obviously used ( cause I rented it used) Usually textbooks tend to be boring and dry making one want to bang ones head against this wall--using this I can instead diagnose the underlying issues that may have caused me to desire to do such an act.

In all seriousness though--it is a good textbook. It is informative, concise, and presents many interesting theories.

This book was actually pretty interesting for a textbook. The book used the most up to date information; the text was more interesting because there was actual case studies and references to pop culture within the last two years. Again, this was pretty good, for a text book.

I am a college student, and I prefer loose leaf books as the are more cost effective. What can I say its a psychology book that is required for my abnormal psychology class.. lol.. Its what I need and what is required by the instructor. The book cam in great condition and I popped it into a binder, and when on to class.. lol..

I like this book because it's informative, easy to read, and it has lots of diagrams and pictures to look at. Every chapter begins with a case study from a person with the disorder that chapter is going to talk about. At the end of each chapter is a page or two with key words to know and small quizzes to take to really help absorb the information. This book is different from the Psychology 101 book I bought in the sense that unlike Psych 101, which has small quizzes at the end of each section, this book includes a summary of what you were just reading. This book was overpriced when I bought, but it is a really good book to own. I recommend it.
I ordered this for a class I'm taking. I was a little apprehensive ordering it from a random vendor (not directly through Amazon), but college textbooks get HELLA expensive, and it was much cheaper online than in all the bookstores near my school. Needless to say, I got really lucky. The vendor said it was in good condition, no marks or missing/damaged pages, and that's exactly what I got.
