Although this book was published in 1890, it remains the basic work on the concept of the Trial by Battle.
The Trial by Battle was introduced into English history by the Normans after 1066, but it had existed among the
German tribes since the earliest times. It rested on two pillars of thought. The first was that when two men had a
dispute that could not be resolved peacefully, they should solve their disagreement by fighting a duel.
The second pillar was that such a duel, carried on under specific rules, led to a decisive decision in which God gave
victory to the honest party, and that the man who was defeated was guilty.

Naturally the Judicial Duel had its detractors and was banned from London during the reign of Henry I, but it remained
a legal procedure in England until 1819.

This book is easy to read and valuable to own, particularly for those interested in arms and law.

Fascinating and informative. Historically enlightening.
