by J. Santino

It is also about contest, conflict, and civil war, and the ways the former are intimately intertwined with the latter, both in Northern Ireland and elsewhere throughout the world.

Signs of War and Peace focuses on the role public display plays in the conflict in Northern Ireland. In doing so, it ranges freely over other times, places, and events that shed light on the social and political processes and dynamics involved in public display traditions, such as the Saint Patrick's Day parades in Boston, Massachusetts, and the popular spontaneous shrines to Lady Diana in London. It is also about contest, conflict, and civil war, and the ways the former are intimately intertwined with the latter, both in Northern Ireland and elsewhere throughout the world.

In both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, The Troubles are a constant point of contention, analysis, public discussion, and outrage. Jack Santino's Signs of War and Peace provides a solid introduction to the nature and history of the conflict as well as to its prevailing ideologies and popular artistic manifestations.

Santino shows great evenhandedness in treating the sides in the conflict, and his study is informative, thoughtful .

Santino shows great evenhandedness in treating the sides in the conflict, and his study is informative, thoughtful, and thought-provoking. This extraordinary ethnographic work sheds a fresh light on the capacity of popular tradition to create public space, and collectively fashioned art-driven by passion and intellect-to articulate what is unsayable in politics. This book is an analysis of the ways in which the various factions in the conflict in Northern Ireland express their views in public ways- murals, parades, and other kids of displays. Santino does a nice job of covering complex ground.

Signs of war and peace: Social conflict and the use of public symbols in Northern Ireland

Signs of war and peace: Social conflict and the use of public symbols in Northern Ireland. New York, NY: Palgrave. Literature on social movements in societies undergoing violent ethno-national conflict between two ‘warring factions’ has typically concentrated on civil rights, ethnic revivalists, peace and women's groups. This paper concentrates on two loose groupings – lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender, and ‘ban-the-bomb’ – that have been ignored.

The Northern Ireland Troubles provides an ideal case study of a conflict once seen . This electoral discrimination led to further injustice in public housing, in public and private employment, and in community.

The Northern Ireland Troubles provides an ideal case study of a conflict once seen as intractable. An understanding of the intricacies of the Troubles provides both a realistic view of the seemingly insurmountable difficulties inherent in managing conflict, and hope that even situations, which seem impossible to resolve do in fact contain the seeds of transformation and resolution. The genesis of the Northern Ireland conflict can be found in the birth of the province itself. This electoral discrimination led to further injustice in public housing, in public and private employment, and in community representation in the Royal Ulster Constabulary, the police force.

The manuscript benefits from large amount of field work in Ireland, and as a result contains both ethnographic data and revealing interviews with many people in Northern Ireland who have participated in the display events Santino seeks to analyze. The perspective that Santino offers helps to explain the intensity of the conflict as well as the origination, motivations, and justifications of bonfires, murals, commemorative displays, parades, etc. that symbolically articulate what he terms the 'dual master narratives' that underlie and in many ways help to articulate the parameters of that conflict.

The book is very good, I have used it for my dissertation, and it gave me many good discussion points and references. It is a book that is written in a manner that intrigues the reader. I found it very interesting, and it gives you material for further thought.

This book is an analysis of the ways in which the various factions in the conflict in Northern Ireland express their views in public ways-- murals, parades, and other kids of displays. Santino does a nice job of covering complex ground. Some symbols are used in different ways by the same groups, while other symbols are unique to a particular side. Placement, content, color, are all examined to show how they convey complex messages. This book is readable, and manages to maintain some objectivity in an otherwise extremely polarized cultural context. I would recommend it to anyone interested in this part of the world.
