Madame Rosa is an elderly, overweight . It was originally published in France as "La Vie Devant Soi," with authorship to Gary's pseudonym, Emile Ajar.

Madame Rosa is an elderly, overweight, retired prostitute who earns her living by taking in the children of working prostitutes. Considering the world they inhabit-filled with pimps, whores, and others of the same ilk-the novel is loving and heartwarming. Generally I don't like reading books written in the first person, especially when the voice of the novel is that of a child. However, an exception is happily made for "The Life Before Us" ("Madame Rosa"). The translation is first-rate.

What a surprise this book was, a real treasure. This is a book I will read again. The choise of words and the way it is written makes you smile more than once even though the story is very sad. Sad and heartwarming. It is about a boy in Paris, he's got no parents but is looked after by Mme Rosa, who also has other children that she looks after. The world i seen through his eyes and the world is just so. The way Emile Ajar describes people is astonishing. The book will leave an impression on my life. I recommend it with all my heart.
Уou ll never walk alone
Rarely does one still encounter a masterpiece that shakes his world and makes him add a new shade of emotion to the range he already had within him. This book is such a work of art. Through the story of the love and compation of a little 8 year old Arab orphan boy to the old Jewish prostitute, a survivor of the Holocaust, who raises him, we hear again the delicate music of the human spirit, of tenderness and compation, of delicate human ties and daily hardships. Run to the bookstores and get this book. Read it and lend it to all you friends till all the pages are completely worn out, and you will never have spent your time and money more wisely.
