An artist and author of books about the American west and, in particular, horses, Will James wrote the 1926 book "Smoky the Cowhorse". It was awarded the John Newbery Medal in 1927, and remains in print to this day. Several movie adaptations of the story have been created, including a 1933 version that included Will James himself as the narrator. His fictionalized autobiography, Lone Cowboy, was written in 1930. He also wrote Home Ranch (1935) and he wrote his last book, The American Cowboy, in 1942.

Will James will ever be my idea of a true cowboy and he was a great Western artist who DESERVES to be remembered . Recently I happened across this book of short stories and wondered if I would still find the magic in his stories that existed for me as a child

Will James will ever be my idea of a true cowboy and he was a great Western artist who DESERVES to be remembered like Russell and Remington IMO. This is a good place to start your Will James collection. Recently I happened across this book of short stories and wondered if I would still find the magic in his stories that existed for me as a child. His grammar and punctuation are not the best, but the publishers must have felt these were part of the charm of his writing and drawings. I notice the charm is still there in his telling, and the beauty and accuracy of his drawings still grab me.

What little boy doesn't dream at least once of someday being a cowboy? I think that if you ask most men, they will admit to this fantasy. In the charming new release "Young Cowboy," the late Western writer Will James magically captures the joy of a little boy growing up learning how to be a cowboy.
By the time little Billy Roper was just one year old, his dad was toting him along on horseback rides. Soon, Billy was leading his own pony Big-Enough around the corral. Young Billy watches the skillful riding and roping of the ranch hands and learns about the hard work and responsibilities required of a cowboy. Readers of all ages who have dreamed of riding and owning a horse will gallop through "Young Cowboy," reining in just long enough to imagine themselves in the intricate pen & ink line drawings and gorgeous full-color paintings that illustrate the story. Anyone who has a real love the old West, as well as anyone who remembers the great childrens' stories of long ago will come to cherish Will James' works
