In flying the various types of captured Allied aircraft that came his way, Lerche did not have the benefit of falling back upon any pilot's notes or operations manual to help him know how each type worked. As a test pilot and a qualified engineer, Lerche learned by doing, taking the aircraft aloft and putting it through its paces

Early flying machines include all forms of aircraft studied or constructed before the development of the modern aeroplane by 1910. The story of modern flight begins more than a century before the first successful manned aeroplane, and the earliest aircraft thousands of years before. From the earliest times there have been legends of men mounting flying devices or strapping birdlike wings, stiffened cloaks or other devices to themselves and attempting to fly, typically by jumping off a tower.

Most aircraft and modern airliners particularly, have their speed controlled by the autopilot. To see the average plane speed for any of our featured aircraft be sure to look in the menu at the top of the page and select the Specs page for your desired airliner. A speed is selected, 300 KIAS for example, and the aircraft happily flies with the auto pilot applying or reducing thrust to maintain the desired 300 KIAS. With the current flight information systems that most airlines offer, it is possible to see how fast you are flying and lots of other interesting statistics as you travel along.
