Victor Hugo est né à Besançon en 1802. Tout en suivant des études de philosophie et de mathématiques au lycée Louis-le-Grand, il s'adonne déjà à la poésie. Il obtient ses premiers succès avec les Odes et Poésies diverses (1822) et s'impose comme chef de file du mouvement romantique après l'ardente " bataille " autour de son drame Hernani (1830).
