Though not as cavernous (or as intimidating) as HallH, the line for the the Watching the Watchmen panel - featuring Watchmen artist DaveGibbons, along with designers Chip Kidd and Mike Essl (and moderated by EW’stireless own Jeff Jensen) - was still pretty intimidating. The conversation eventually came back to the genesisof the book, with Gibbons explaining that he hadalways been a hoarder and had prety much kept everything he had that was related to the creation of Watchmen, including some of Moore’s unused scripts. Responsible for organizing and putting everything together were Kidd and Essl.

Featuring the breathtaking design of Chip Kidd and Mike Essl, WATCHING THE WATCHMEN is both a major art book in its own right, and the definitive companion to the graphic novel that changed an industry. I've had a great time, re-visiting the very beginnings of Watchmen and unearthing material I haven't set eyes on for many years. As a fan myself, this is the kind of stuff I eat up and I'm sure the many devotees of the graphic novel will do the same!" says Gibbons.

Dave Gibbons drew THE WATCHMEN in 1986-87, and no comic book of the last 30 years has had a greater impact! WATCHING THE WATCHMEN goes through the creative process of staging that masterpiece, and no fan of comic books will be disappointed in his insights. A solid writer as well as an excellent artist, Gibbons teams with book designer Chip Kidd and delivers a distinctive behind the curtain look at how magic is made and we in the audience are surely the better for it :D

Product description on Amazon said it was "hand signed by artist Dave Gibbons on the title page". This is not true. There is a photocopied letter towards the back of the book that includes Gibbons' signature, but it is not hand signed. Nice to see the behind the scenes and sketches that made the comic what it is, but it would have been nice to get accurate information about the product.

If you like Watchmen, Alan Moore, and/or Dave Gibbons, get it. Just don't expect a signature.

This book is mostly artwork, and much of it is concept sketches. I can see the appeal of this book for someone who draws, but I was hoping for more insight on the creation of the Watchmen series as a whole, meaning plot line and character development. This book felt more like a money grab than a thoughtful reflection. It will look good on a bookshelf, but it's rather too large to be practical.

I'm not much of a reader. I try to buy books with good art or good art direction for inspiration, ideas.. etc. I do art, so art books are what I looks for & purchase. This is a great book. It does have a lot of art in it, but don't think it's all beautiful finished artworks. It's actually more rough sketches/Layouts than anything else, but it gives you a lot of ideas, n even could teach you some technics/ways of doing some of the art like these just by looking at them.
It does have some texts, but I barely read anything... so I'm not commenting on that topic.
If you're just looking for an inspiring ArtBook to go through.. or just some eye candy on your coffee/beer/... table to look at every once in a while, then this is a really nice/well made book for you with a great price tag on it. Totally worth it ; ]

I wasn't sure whether this companion book would interest and engage me - I've read Watchmen itself multiple times and have studied the artwork and corrollary works. I was thoroughly delighted when I cracked the covers. It contains artwork in various stages of drafting, some correspondence, full color panels, and easy to read descriptions of it all. It did contain some new information I enjoyed learning, and even where I knew something already, the draft artwork or new panels were enjoyable to look at. It's a big, beautiful book as well, and something I will be picking up and leafing through for a long time to come.

This item is really great but before I get into this review I am going to describe what this item actually is. It is a very unique thing, as is Watchmen, that is part graphic novel part written documentary and has a very reality based thought process that shows exactly what Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons were thinking while developing the story. It also tells how they met, what they were doing before Watchmen, and plenty about what Watchmen means to them. Great book, great story, amazing transformation drawings of pretty much every character, including a full body spandex blot suit that Rorschach started out in. Just to mention, this book is a high quality hardcover with a dust sleeve so it will really last a long time and looks more sophisticated then a bunch of comics sprawled all over the place. This really is THE definitive companion to the graphic novel and is highly recommended by me on just the artwork alone. Hope this helps.

This book provides amazing insights into the minds of the creators of Watchmen. Dave Gibbons (the artist) shows many wonderful pages of story breakdown, character design and layout for this seminal work of comics history. Highly recommend this to anyone interested in the art of making Watchmen a reality.
The material in this book is an absolute must for anyone who is a fan, and has followed the Watchmen story. there are some great drawing's done by Dave Gibbons from when this masterpiece was created. Gibbons even takes time to tell stories of when he and Alan Moore met and over time were able to put the story together. If you do not own this, you are missing out.
