Dead men don’t ski. It was just nine o'clock on a cold and clammy January morning when Chief Inspector Henry Tibbett's taxi drew up outside the uninviting cavern of Victoria Station. From the suburban lines the Saturday morning hordes of office-bound workers streamed anxiously through the barriers to bus and underground-pale, strained faces, perpetually in a hurry, perpetually late: but here, at this side-entrance that led into a sort of warehouse fitted with an imposing array of weighing-platforms, were assembled a group of people who looked as paradoxical at that.

Dead Men Don't Ski. Patricia Moyes. These Henry Tibbett mysteries sort of grew on you. I really liked it, perhaps because I was lucky enough to have visited Kheukenhof Gardens in April when the tulips bloom. Mass Market Paperback. A very enjoyable little mystery. One person found this helpful.

I recently dusted off my collection of Patricia Moyes books and started reading them chronologically, with "Dead Men Don't Ski" being the first in line. It has been so long that I actually didn't remember the plot (one of the nicer things about getting old!), but was immediately reminded how great she is as a mystery writer.

In Dead Men Don't Ski she introduces Inspector Henry Tibbett, a blissfully ordinary English copper with a pleasantly plump wife and a nose for the bad guys. Sadly for Henry (but happily for us) that nose has a knack of ruining his vacations. In Dead Men, he and Emmy are headed for the Italian Dolomites, ready for a spot of skiing and some first-class people-watching, all those athletic youngsters in their swanky late-1950s ski outfits. Patricia Moyes (1923-2000) was a British mystery writer best known for her Henry Tibbet series of old-fashioned mysteries. During WWII Moyes joined the Royal Air Force and became a radar operator and flight officer.

So very happy these books are finally starting to come out in Kindle format; I have been waiting what feels like forever for them. I read them back in the 90s in paperback format, but you know, paperback doesn't last forever, and even if it did I wasn't able to get them all (like #2). I'm really hoping Amazon will publish more than just the first 4.

First time I have read this authors books and must say thoroughly enjoyed it, have purchased the rest that are on kindle hope the others follow.

An excellent mystery, an atmospheric and remarkably well written book. But actually I enjoyed most of all the travel in Europe of the 1960th and just the whole time travel-like thing. Such a gem!

It was a pleasure to find this mystery, which is a true whodunit in the classic vein, not a novel disguised as a mystery. It's beautifully and carefully crafted work. It's unfortunate that Moyes books have become so hard to find, but I'll be looking for them.
Flocton
Really enjoyable British cozy style mystery. I felt like I had gone on vacation to an Alpine ski resort by the time I was done. Clean too -- not a lot of crude language or sex.
Mariwyn
Very contrived. Weird plot twists.

Dead Men Don't Ski (1958) introduces Henry Tibbett, a Scotland Yard Inspector. When Henry and his wife Emmy decided to take a skiing vacation, his superiors decide this is a perfect opportunity to investigate drug smuggling connected to Santa Chiara, a small village in the Italian Alps. On the train Emmy and Henry meet two parties also traveling to the Bella Vista ski hotel: Colonel Buckfast and his annoying wife, and rich young Jimmy Passendell and his friends Caro and Roger. Henry and Emmy throw themselves wholeheartedly into skiing lessons and getting to know their fellow guests until one is shot on the ski lift connecting the hotel to the village below. The local investigators unmask Henry as a fellow policeman and ask his help in translating the interviews with the English guests. Henry in turn brings Emmy in to take notes. Henry's affable gentlemanly exterior hides a sharp mind and a nose for crime, supported by Emmy's cheerful capability and excellent listening skills. This series opener is a thoroughly enjoyable example of the classic British detective novel enlivened with a beautifully rendered setting.

Her plots are intricate, richly populated with interesting characters, and most of all, her books are very well written. I think it's time for Patricia Moyes to be resurrected and re-appreciated! Surprised that the publisher has not made an effort to reissue her books.
