Kenneth S. Lynn, Howells's latest biographer and sympathetic advocate . He left, like other Victorian writers, a copious legacy of novels, travel books, letters, reminiscences, literary criticism and poetry. Lynn, Howells's latest biographer and sympathetic advocate, believes that Howells, a man of the middle, has fallen victim to our present preference for cultural extremism. Professor Lynn does not wish to revive the Howells cult, only to repair the statues so that we can see what the man really was like. He tells Howells's story competently. If psychic inhibitions blocked his imaginative powers, as Lynn concedes and scrupulously documents, the biographer needs to Show more than psychiatric charity to his subject.

William Dean Howells. William Dean Howells (1837-1920) was an American realist author and literary critic. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. He wrote his first novel, Their Wedding Journey, in 1871, but his literary reputation really took off with the realist novel A Modern Instance, published in 1882, which describes the decay of a marriage. His 1885 novel The Rise of Silas Lapham is perhaps his best known, describing the rise and fall of an American entrepreneur in the paint business.
