Good book as a read/training book, not quick reference. As an experienced coder, when I first started using jQuery, it was only for some of the cool widgets (calendar, tabs, etc.), but once I finally took time to read the book, I was convinced to use jQuery more often rather than always coding in javascript.
Made-with-Love
This is a good book to follow your first jQuery book. It won't hold your hand through learning the basics of JavaScript, but if you are ready to take your jQuery to a level where you can use it in the enterprise, this is a good, well-written resource.

This author always makes it easy for the reader.

No wonder, I got another book on ASP.NET that I found easy to read and understand.
And he happen to be the same author.

This is a great buy for me.

Adam Freeman is one of the most thorough authors of computer reference manuals. I value his books for their conciseness and ease to follow. I was required by work to take a crash course in jQuery and this book saved the day. The author always covers the entire scope of whatever particular topic he is writing about and makes it easy to understand. I highly recommend any book with his name on it, I wish he had more books out in circulation.

Each of the commonly used functions and properties of jQuery is fully documented with each having its own clearly articulated example program ready to run in your browser and fully explained. More importantly, the author carefully explains the many nuances and subtleties along the way. He goes out of his way to highlight potential stumbling blocks to make the learning curve less painful. Also, all source is available on-line, and most of it works.

If you are a visual learner, this is the book for you. With each sample program, a screen shot is provided, which clearly indicates the effect produced by the jQuery script.

Another area in which the author excels and differentiates himself is demonstrating through the use of simple real-world examples two exceptionally versatile and useful jQuery plugins: tmpl and validate, greatly easing the development process.

The examples in the book are real-world and especially relevant to ecommerce developers. The author even provides an animated ajax-generated progress indicator using an animated gif.

Moreover, the author covers the entire jQuery UI with just as much detail as for the jQuery core including the sample programs and screen shots. A new level of efficiency can be gained while upping web site sophistication and usability. No more guessing how this object works or how that method is called or what needs to be done to display such and such widget. You can take the examples right out of the book and tailor them to your specific needs. The heavy lifting has been done for developers, so they can remain focused on how their web site works rather than be caught up in the nitty gritty details of the interface.

Another innovative method of the author clearly setting him apart from other such books is the use of node.js to facilitate examples requiring a server side scripts (e.g. form submissions, AJAX), so that the reader need not have a deep knowledge of how to set up or use server side scripts. Very painless so you stay focused on the core material.

A useful supplement to this book is Flanagan's jQuery Pocket Reference, which can be used both as a reference and as tutorial (a bit dry reading but very concise and much more accessible once you have read and understood Pro jQuery).

Bear in mind that although this book has been written with the assumption of no prior jQuery knowledge, the reader *will* need to have a fundamental knowledge and understanding of HTML, CSS, and Javascript in order to understand the material covered in this book and fully appreciate the concise elegance of jQuery.

The author begins with a brief refresher on HTML, CSS, and Javascript, providing the bare bones knowledge required to understand the rest of the book, but presented at a high enough level so experienced people will gain from a quick read of those chapters as well.

The reader should also have at least a basic understanding of how to set up a web server and how to publish web pages on it. I used the same machine (a Win7 laptop) to read the book using Kindle for PC, to test the sample programs using the web server I installed on it, and to test AJAX using node.js which I also installed on the laptop. In other words, I did not require Internet access nor a web server located on the Internet - that's a key advantage to using this book.

To sum up, this was an excellent effort and is a must-have for those looking to learn jQuery and jQuery UI as quickly as possible and get a useful stable of code snippets they can easily integrate into their development efforts.

One last note, I purchased the Kindle version for my PC. The text and diagrams are easy to read, and it has a summary and a very detailed table of contents making topics easy to locate without having to put in a ton of bookmarks or highlights. I ran the sample programs on a web browser on my laptop while reading the book on a secondary monitor connected to my laptop.
