This zany book was the greatest stress-buster of the holiday. Seeing Bullas' "punky derm" and "last call for the bear bar" made me realize that we humans take ourselves too seriously

This zany book was the greatest stress-buster of the holiday. Seeing Bullas' "punky derm" and "last call for the bear bar" made me realize that we humans take ourselves too seriously. Maybe we couldn't have fireworks or backyard cookouts or even leave the city because most of the roads were closed, but I was safe and comfortable and able to laugh at the absurdities of Bullas' wonderful paintings. I still don't know why the introduction was written by Clint Eastwood, but maybe that, too, is a subtle putdown! The book raised my spirits.

His entire life, Art has only cared about sports and nothing grabs his attention quite like the lightning-fast violence of Rugby League. He knows it could kill him, but it also makes him feel alive. In this hard-bitten Yorkshire mining town, the warriors of the rugby pitch are treated like gods. Through the aggressive sport, Art finds money, friends, and countless women. But when his lust for violence begins to fade, will he have the courage to leave the game behind? Fiction. To read this book, upload an EPUB or FB2 file to Bookmate.

Home Mordecai Richler Dispatches From the Sporting Life. George Plimpton’s Open Net belongs up there on that still unfortunately small shelf of literate hockey books, alongside the best of them. I am grateful, as I am sure Plimpton is too, that he survived his ordeal without ever taking a puck in the groin, ringing the berries, as they say. The pain, one goalie warned him, is like taking your top lip and folding it back over your head, a thrill professionals contend with each time out.

When did you first get the idea to write this book? It’s kind of been with me since I was a kid, even though I didn’t think of it as a book back then. My great-great uncle was John Drew, one of the first black millionaires in the Philadelphia area. Throughout their lives, they put themselves at risk and exposed themselves, funneling the money they were able to make into abolition, civil rights, anti-lynching. They had very good lives with beautiful houses, with all sorts of luxuries, but they devoted an incredible amount of their money trying to help the African-American community.
