by Sally Wendkos Olds and Marvin S. Select Format: Paperback. Mass Market Paperback. However, this guide covers more than just the benefits of breastfeeding and feeding techniques. It is a logically written and informative guide to breastfeeding and how it relates to all the relevant aspects of post-partum family life-including getting baby to sleep, using a breast pump, returning to work, and weaning. I especially appreciated the section on trouble-shooting strategies.

Complete Book of Breastfeeding.

Complete Book of Breastfeeding. Marvin Eiger, a nationally known pediatrician and breastfeeding authority, and Sally Wendkos Olds, an award-winning medical writer who nursed her own three childrem, provide you with all the new information you need to make nursing your baby a deeply rewarding part of your life. It is established as a classic in the medical field.

With over one and a half million trade and mass-market paperback copies in print, The Complete Book of Breastfeeding is one of the recognized classics in its field. Now it has been completely revised and updated, and dovetails perfectly with the recent major policy statement by the American Academy of Pediatrics, which recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and continued nursing for at least one year and as long thereafter as mother and child desire. In addition to incorporating the new AAP guidelines throughout the book, the Third Edition draws on the very latest research from prominent scholars and practitioners in the field. It presents new information on how breastfeeding offers protection against various diseases for both child and mother; new discussion of the positive impact of breastfeeding on a child's cognitive development; a greatly expanded section on available support systems and their importance; guidelines to help a mother-to-be choose a hospital or birthing center with breastfeeding-positive policies; and a new section on signs of baby's adequate milk intake, with charts. Plus new and expanded sections on nutrition for lactating mothers, the mother's social life, the role of the father, the nursing working mother, how to express, store, and offer breast milk, and how to wean your child. This is the warm, accessible, and authoritative guide for every new mother.

I will give this book as a gift to every pregnant woman I know! I read this book and then took a breastfeeding class and spoke with four lactation consultants and I swear I could become a lactation specialist after reading this book! I attribute my absolute positive breastfeeding experience to this book! It was NOT easy by any means and I've had every nursing problem from latching issues, sore cracked bleeding nipples, engorged breasts, mastitis, pumping issues, over production of milk, overactive letdown, then underproduction of milk! Holy cow! But I knew how to solve and handle it all!!! I absolutely LOVE breastfeeding and the bonding time with my baby and I owe all of my knowledge and perseverance to this book!

I bought 2 books on breastfeeding and got 1 as gift from lactation consultant I work with. The 2 that I bought were ok. The lactation consultant gave me Breastfeeding Made Simple by Nancy Mohrbacher and I loved it. This one was long and did have the depth of information I expected. There are better resources out there. All the information was correct but I got bored reading due to the length. I did like that it had information on formula and bottles, not a lot of breastfeeding books cover those topics.

This is a very thorough guide to breastfeeding which covers a wide range of topics, from positioning and coping with problems to pumping at work and dressing for nursing in public. In that sense, it's complete. On the other hand, there were some topics which seemed to be mysteriously skipped. When my baby started clusterfeeding around week two or three, for instance, I thought there was something wrong with my milk supply. I found nothing about this issue in this book. Instead, the information I needed came from a website, which assured me that this fussy period of clusterfeeding was common and did not mean that my baby wasn't getting enough milk. And there, I think, is the problem this book will increasingly face: in the internet age, there may be more complete (and sometimes more up-to-date) information on breastfeeding on internet parenting and lactation sites. It's just not possible for any one book to go into great depth on every issue, whereas a website with multiple contributors can have an almost-encyclopedic range of articles on different topics.

Bottom line: if you are a nursing mother who likes to read and you want a breastfeeding resource for your library, go ahead and buy this book. I don't think you will regret it. It is well-written and has been recently updated. You just need to realize that for some issues, you'll get better info elsewhere.

The Complete Book of Breastfeeding helped me through every challenge known to breastfeeding moms. Whenever I had a question, all I had to do was check the index and find the answer quickly and easily. This book was by far the best book on breastfeeding that I used while nursing my three children -- all of whom were different and who posed different challenges. It gives useful, helpful information and advice that works. There's no preaching to the choir like in some other books. Just practical, research-backed advice on how to breastfeed through each stage of a baby's development and the mom's life. I credit this book with giving me the knowledge I needed to realize that breastfeeding is a learning process for mother and infant and that I could return to work and still nurse my babies exclusively for six months until they started on solids. This is the book I give to friends and relatives who are expecting their first baby. With this book, you can successfully breastfeed for as long as you like.

I bought this book while I was nursing my second baby because I needed reassurance all over again. (There are 8 years' difference in my first and second children.) Thanks goodness I bought it, as I'm now nursing baby #3, and I STILL needed to refer to this book (every baby's different, you know!).
The Complete Book of Breastfeeding offered all the support that I couldn't get from others. It even has a chapter for the father of the baby, so that he can better understand your decision to breastfeed, and what he can do to help you and how he can bond w/ baby.
This book also offers advice on how to handle those who tell you that a mother's milk is not sufficient for providing enough nutrition for your baby.
With help from this book, I was able to learn how to build up my milk supply and keep it up after going back to work. It also gave me the nerve to talk w/ my boss about breastfeeding issues and ask for permission to take a longer bathroom break then usual in order to pump milk for my baby for the next day.
There is an excellent section in here that tells you when it's safe to nurse if you're sick, and what medications are OK to take while nursing.
If you are determined to nurse your baby, to continue breastfeeding after returning to work, or just need information while you're nursing, this book is an excellent choice in helping you prepare for every situation that arrives.

My baby is not born yet, but this was a great way to get introduced to all of the concepts around breastfeeding. Very practical with lots of good tips and suggestions for all situations. I feel confident that if I run into any problems I can use this book to help me find the right place to get help. Some other reviews mentioned it was very preachy about breastfeeding, hello..it is a book about breastfeeding, of course they think it is the best. However, I think the author is good about letting you know that any amount of breastfeeding is good and you shouldn't feel guilty or bad if there is some reason you can not pursue it as long as you would like.

I learned so much from this book! Taking a class at our local hospital too, but I feel I am more ready than ever after reading this book. I enjoyed the other information as I am a FTM, about diaper changing, jaundice and other conditions, medications, ways dad can help, etc.
