by Cathy Bryant (Author), Ian Platt (Photographer). I learned how to tat from this book when it was first published 20 years ago. About half of the book consists of instructions for everything you need to know about basic tatting, including two methods for completing the double stitch, how to make chains, picots, joins, half stitch techniques and a few decorative techniques, as well as tatting with two shuttles and how to read patterns. The illustrations are clear, and the author provides tips along the way for making tatting easier and more beautiful.

Its a very good book for tatters. The most of it, is learning the techniques. There is only a small section of tatting patterns.
NOTE: This book has some very good drawings of hiding ends....if you are having trouble, this book would probably help you. Not EVERYTHING tatting is put in here, but it would be an excellent purchase for any tatter.

Great book for explaining tatting technique. I am surprised at the prices listed. This is an old out of print book that should sell for no more than $10.00. Keep checking Amazon for fair prices.

this book has a lot of beginner tips on how to read a pattern and good pattern details. Small and unique projects.
If I only had one instructional book in my tatting library, it would be this one. I have referred to it again and again.

The second half of the book has 28 patterns varying in difficulty for edgings, inserts, motifs, doilies, collars, baby booties, little baskets, and a decorative covering for a Christmas ornament.

My only criticism of the book is that the beautiful doily shown on the cover (made with two shuttles) has a mistake in the pattern. This is easily corrected by NOT turning or reversing the work after the first ring which is made with shuttle one. All subsequent rings and chains are then made with the opposite shuttle from that which is listed in the pattern. For example, the pattern says that the first chain should be made with shuttle 2, when in fact, it is made with shuttle 1. Other than that, I have been very happy with the patterns--the baby booties are adorable and make a wonderful gift. I'm also happy to see that this book is now available for a reasonable price.
