If you've read a ton of stuff on tanks & armored warfare, think twice about this book. It's a primer for those who are just beginning an interest in tanks. What I liked: It has some really good photos of tanks and posters here, quotes from various military leaders and shots of the interior of tanks.

Things I did not like - the publishers put poems from WWI in the margins even as the text had moved onto WW2. Because of the size of the photos, there isn't room for more than the most cursory review of the evolution of tanks. There are no line drawings, not enough photos of a specific tank to be of use for a modeler. The photos are very random - you'll be ready about WW1 and see a cold war tank, then jump to WW2 and see WW2 tanks, then back to the future. It did not flow well. There are errors in the text and the narrative barely glosses over actual tank tactics.

I bought this book used for $1.00, so I'm not complaining - just letting you know what you're getting for your money, a pretty collection of photos and posters and a very superficial overview of armored warfare.

This book is not what it appears. It's much more than a review of the history of the tank (although that is here, and very well done). In addition there are many first person accounts, discussions of the tank's impact on political and societal issues, and very personal stories told by tankers from the Great War to the Gulf War, in action and in training. Sure there are terrific photos, but this is not just history - but the emotion, reaction, and pathos that are what history really is formed of. It's a book that makes you think about much more than hardware. Remarkably well done and worthwhile. Buy it.

Purchased this book because it was exceedingly inexpensive. The information it gives seems to be accurate but the organization of the book was confusing. I enjoyed it mostly because for less than $2 I got a hard back book that me and the kids could thumb through.
