Like most of the time-life series of books, this one is well written
and illustrated. Chapter one is "first encounters" like:John Cabot,
Jacques Cartier, Martin Frobisher, and, John Davis.
Chapter two, "siren song of the north": Hudson, sir Thomas Button, and, William Baffin.
Chapter three,"ambitious assaults" :the Hudson Bay company, Samuel Hearne and,Cook.
Chapter four:"inside the maze": William Scoresby ,John Ross, William EdwardPparry,
john Franklin ,Frederick Beechey, and James Clark Ross.
Chapter five,"martyrs to fame": George Back, Thomas Simpson,Franklin's expedition of 1845,
Robert Mcclure, the search for franklin's expedition, John Rae,and the book ends
with:Roald Amundsen,the "gjoa"(ship),and some photos
of modern "icebreakers".

This book has color and black/white illustrations, drawings and diagrams.
