Delightful way to continue a wonderful series. Just wished it were longer. Hope there's another sequel in the works.

Nick Hoffman is writing professor at the State University of Michigan, who lives with his lifepartner Stefan Borowski, an author. When a newcomer to the faculty, Perry Cross, is found murdered, suspicion falls on Stefan (who had a previous relationship with the difficult man) and Nick (who seemed resentful of his appointment to the faculty). The couple try to overcome the homophobic bias of a detective investigating the case, and bring the true killer into the spotlight.

This is a reissue of the first in Raphael's series of seven "Nick Hoffman" mysteries, and I read them all. As a series, they are well-written, but tend to be rather light on plot and mystery development, though strong on characterizations; indeed, the positive depiction of the "everyman" gay couple, working at a relatively conservative campus, is perhaps the strongest aspect of these stories. Though only 13 years since its initial release, this seemed a little outdated to me, though it was a comfort to "visit" with old friends again. I give the book four homecoming stars out of five.
