I Have to Write a Poem. From the book The Tighty-Whitey Spider. I have to write a poem but I really don’t know how. So maybe I’ll just make a rhyme with something dumb, like cow. Okay, I’ll write about a cow, but that’s so commonplace. I think I’ll have to make her b. cow from outer space! My cow will need a helmet and a space suit and a ship. What are you looking for?

Introduces various kinds of poems, language, imagery, and rhyme, and suggests ways to write poems of one's own

This book is for all ages. I picked this up in a thrift store
(20 years ago) because I was interested in learning HOW
to write poetry.
The author explains different types of poems : "I" and "You",
imagery,simile,metaphor,associations,irony,satire,fantasy,
lyric, rhyme, love, etc. The author includes poems showing
examples of each type and explaining the particulars of each
poem in this book. I found it an easy way to understand how
and what poetry is. I recommend this for EVERYONE, not
just students. I still check this book out every once in a while
and I am 49 years old.

I first read this book when I was probably 11 or 12. At first I didn't understand a lot of the poetry but as I matured and learned I realized what a great book it is. Some of the poems are based off of known poets poems, like one was written by a teenage girl that mirrored Robert Frost poem "Fire and Ice". I think her poem was about glass?? I can't remember but she uses all the literary techiques that Frost does in his poem. Some of the poems are silly and some are sad. Some are iambic pentameter while others are free verse. It is a great starter poetry book for those who are serious about poetry.

A friend lent me this book about 6 years ago and it changed the way I thought about poetry. I had never read any free verse before, and instead of being difficult and vague, the poetry was engaging, funny, colorful and descriptive. I couldn't believe that people my age were writing these poems. That summer my journal was full of poems describing my experiences while travelling in south america. I treasure these for the images they portray.
I liked the book because the poems are commented on, which helped me to learn what makes a poem outstanding. Since that summer I have always written poetry and it's a real joy, an artform that provides joy in expression.
Even if you don't want to write poetry, this book is full of poems that will make you want to sing. Memorable ones that you will think of a long time later.
One starts:
Hey girl hipswaying swirl of colored cloth...
and continues in syllables that roll off the tongue.
Enjoy!!
