The Orphans of Normandy book. In her Afterword, Nancy Amis explains that her aunt, a French teacher named Agnes Amis was friends with the school’s directress, Yvonne Lesure. In 1946, Agnes Amis received a package from Mme. Lesure containing an explanation of the school's situation, a child’s dress and the illustrated journal of the journey the school had undertaken because of the invasion. It was the beginning of an exchange of letters and care packages to help the school get on it feet again and re-establish itself.

When the Allies invaded Normandy on June 6th, 1944, one hundred orphaned girls were forced to flee their orphanage in Caen, the only home many of them had ever known. They began a long trek to safety, to Beaufort-en-Vallee, a town one hundred and fifty miles away. As the war raged on all sides, the girls, led by their teachers, bravely marched south, keeping one step ahead of the fighting and waving little white flags for protection. Told through their own coloured-pencil drawings and words, this moving and timely book details their experiences on their journey to safety.

There's what happened and then there are the stories of what happened. Plenty of books about Churchill, Hitler, Stalin, FDR. What about the other billion people? This is one.

I found this book at our local library. When I read through it, I knew I wanted to add it to my collection of books that I homeschool my children with. I loved reading the experiences of the girls. It gave me a taste of what they must have felt during that time of war.

excellent primary source book to share with children.....

Wonderful Story!
Weernis
Charmingly illustrated by the children in the orphanage, the story tells the real story of children being moved to escape the German invasion. They did not mention my Great Aunt Annie who worked at the orphanage, alas.

Excellent and thanks.

For every girl who ever wanted an adventure about brave girls, this is a real one, it really did happen.
The War has been raging for five long years & when the Allies land in Normandy, one hundred girls are driven out of their orphanage, the only home they have known, by the harried German soldiers & forced to trek on foot to a safer place, some 150 miles away in the south.
Told in pencil crayon drawings, like samplers girls used to stitch, we enter their beloved world: their classrooms, sewing room, kitchen garden, chicken house; their orchard & milk cows, & their dormitory where the girls watch airraids in the sky outside of their windows.
& then their journey begins, into a forest, across a war-torn land & through ruined villages, these brave children walk in their red, white & blue dresses, carrying only a blanket, some bread & little white flags of peace.
RebeccasReads recommends THE ORPHANS OF NORMANDY as a jewel. If how girls draw the world is of any interest to you, you will be enchanted & awed by the picture story they tell. Within each page the girls wrote of what they saw (in French, naturally) & opposite is a clear & simple English translation.
This book is written with firsthand accounts of simple statements and drawings from several orphan girls who had to quickly leave their loving orphanage/school in Normandy during World War II. Together, with their school mistress, they traveled on foot approximately 150 miles while watching aerial attacks and many other horrific scenes. A wonderful discussion book to share with your child, or a classroom when covering the far reaching effects of war.
