Owney is a lovable character, and children will enjoy reading about his travels. After finishing the book, a young reader will also have learned a great deal about geography and 19th century life. I highly recommend this book!

I bought this book to do an interactive activity using Google Earth with an after school program with kindergarten to fifth grade students. I thought the interactive piece of it would be amusing (note: the interactive part is not formally part of the book, I found out about it online), and that would help it to appeal to this wide age range. I discovered that it was a little long for even the fifth graders. The format is such that you are reading different letters on the dog's journey around the world. It gets a little tiresome after the first few, and some of the letters are really long, and totally lost my audience. Could this book be better for a more one on one interaction with a child? Possibly, but I'm not sure what age range would find it appealing. It seems like by the time you can read something this wordy, you might be more interested in early stages chapter books. But do bear in mind that I brought it to kids after school on a Friday; maybe it would go over better in the morning on a Tuesday.

This was a hit at our sons 4th birthday party who loves anything to do with the post office. The story about Owney is a really neat one as it is part of the postal history. There are many books on the topic of Owney and this one is a good one.

Owney was an amazing dog! I had never heard of him until I got this book for my birthday. I loved learning that a dog went all the way around the world over a hundred years ago! I also loved that the story was al in letters. And I loved the illustrations, too. I give this book an A++

In addition to a wonderful, exuberant story that has a strong educational component, this lovely book has illustrations that are compositionally strong. As in her other works, Ms. Kelly does not water down her art when creating for children. The expressive use of color and design provide an experience far beyond the usual cartoon-like children's illustrations! Clearly an artist in her own right, Ms. Kelly has a gift for fusing material which is at a child's level with lovely small "paintings" which glow and resonate thorughout her work.

My kids and I all love this new story as well as her earlier books!
