Series: Galaxy Children's Large Print Books Nonetheless it is still a fascinating adventure for the Famous Five to solve. Definitely recommended. Publisher: Galaxy (December 1, 2001). Enid Blyton knows how to write a suspenseful book and always in an interesting location like on the Moors. You feel as if you are right there with the children experiencing the adventure. It's a fun book whether you're first reading it as a child or years later as an adult. It's written back some years, but it doesn't matter. It's still an adventure-although in these days, you couldn't live like that and go off without parental protection. Nonetheless it is still a fascinating adventure for the Famous Five to solve.

THE FAMOUS FIVE

THE BEST FOR A FIRST READ!

Enid’s Famous Five books featuring Julian, Dick, George and Anne and Timmy the dog, were the catalyst which encouraged me to start reading more than 50 years ago. Thank you, Enid. The BBC, many public libraries, local authorities and alleged educational experts have been completely wrong about the worth of the Blyton works. I can remember having quite a lot of difficulty obtaining the original books as so many places would not stock them. The stories are great to read for their simplicity and straightforwardness.

When one did find copies of the book they were quite expensive all those years ago but great to own. I loved the letter on the back cover from Enid in some of the editions, and also the physical appearance of the book which I treasured as a youngster with the way the books were produced then which made them somehow much easier to read.

It’s a delight to read the stories again in middle age although recent editing has diminished some of the memories I have of the original editions and words used then (but I am now getting old).

Never mind… these books remain one of my best friends for life: they began my own reading adventure so do read these special adventures for yourselves.

As a child I loved the adventures of the Famous Five.Recently I read this book and was somewhat appalled. Enid Blyton has been criticised for sexism, elitism and racism. I can now see the first two faults in this book. George is a tomboy, and says to Jo, another tomboy, "You're as good as a boy." Out of the Five, Anne is the only real girl, and in this story she plays a very minor role. She misses out on the real action. The lower class paper boy is treated with condescension by the author. There is also a disturbing level of violence directed towards Jo in this book. She is beaten by her father, and twice by Dick. Although Dick beats her by mistake, she still gets injured. On top of this, she doesn't mind when Dick beats her, because she likes him. This is a very unhealthy state of affairs. As usual the action is gripping, but the author's anti-social attitudes are a real worry.
