A dazzling engagement ring and the promise of a fresh start in a new country bring antiques dealer and sometime-sleuth Rei Shimura to Washington, D.C. But while she tries to play catch-up with her beautiful, politically connected cousin, Kendall, and is commissioned to furnish a chic Japanese-fusion restaurant, things start to go haywire. First, Kendall vanishes from the restaurant's opening-night party, and then Rei is drafted to help Andrea, the restaurant's elegant, cagey hostess, investigate the disappearance of her own Japanese mother thirty years earlier.

As the strands of these puzzles begin to come together, Rei finds that her relationship with her fiancé, Hugh, has changed from sizzle to burn. At the same time, she faces troubling questions about what it means to be a loving mother -- and whether her own independent streak will endanger the women to whom she has grown close.

Rei must research the scary old days of the Vietnam War and delve into the secret history of an ambitious presidential candidate to piece together the mystery of the vanished women -- and also understand truths about herself, which may change her destiny.

I am really loving this series and I think this is my favorite so far. As usual, there are several story lines going on at once. Rei's life continues to be quite complicated with her love life, her family and her attempts to be independent and make her own way. In this book, we are introduced to a cousin from her Baltimore mother's side of her family. As so often happens with family, she is quite different from Rei. But this does not prevent strong family loyalty. This is combined with kidnappings and helping an abrasive young woman, also half-Japanese, unearth truths about her Japanese heritage. These truths, of course, others are determined should remain hidden. But I most loved the ending which I would describe as poignant and very satisfying. As with other books in this series, good story-telling is combined with insight into Japanese culture and issues faced by children of mixed heritage.

Sujata Massey develops some of the most interesting and complex mystery plots I've ever encountered. She obviously loves Japan, the Japanese culture, and the Japanese people. Although I thought I knew a lot about Japan and its people I learned a lot more from Ms. Massey's series. These are books are well researched and well written. The protagonist, Rei, is a bit quirky, sometimes not using good sense in her misadventures, but always likeable.

I was born and raised for years in Japan, and so, my mind-set is quite Japanese. I've read several of Massey-san's books. The first several books were OK for me. But, after that, some books made me kind of mad... for example, "The Bride's Kimono" drove me mad because of false description of Japanese history, and her misunderstanding of Japanese culture.

But, I found this "The Pearl Diver" OK, or more than OK. I like her warm eyes on Japanese women... I am sure she has researched a lot about how Japanese women were treated by Japanese men until several decades ago, I mean before WWII. Actually, Japan is still men-dominated country, literally. Under that environment, many Japanese women are calm, docile.. but at the same time, their heart and mind are quiet strong!

So, throughout this book, I could comfortably followed the story and enjoyed those independent Japanese and half-Japanese women's activities.

At the end, sorry for my awkward English!

I continue to be a fan of this series and this may be one of my favorites. The combination of history, cultural details, mystery and the DC restaurant scene all make for engrossing reading. Massey creates some very compelling characters and develops some nice, nuanced relationships (with the exception of Rei and Hugh being clunky at times--hard to believe that they are so inept in communicating with each other when they are so otherwise insightful, etc). I loved the storyline--great for new readers and fans of the series alike!

I love her Rei Shimura books, but I am very disappointed that I cannot get them all in paperback. I am NOT a kindle person!

Is she still writing?

This is one in a series of books by Sujata Massey. They are all excellent, each one leaves you wanting to read the next one. The nice thing is they all stand alone as well, you don't need to read the earlier ones to enjoy this one.
