Louis Stanton Auchincloss (/ˈɔːkɪŋklɒs/; September 27, 1917 – January 26, 2010) was an American lawyer, novelist, historian, and essayist.

Louis Stanton Auchincloss (/ˈɔːkɪŋklɒs/; September 27, 1917 – January 26, 2010) was an American lawyer, novelist, historian, and essayist. He is best known as a novelist who parlayed his experiences into books exploring the experiences and psychology of American polite society and old money. He wrote his novels initially under the name Andrew Lee, the name of an ancestor who cursed any descendant who drank or smoked.

I first read of Auchincloss in David Halberstam's classic work The Best and the Brightest; he mentioned how Washington power figure Robert Lovett was cited in an Auchincloss book. This turned out to be the book. Powers of Attorney, a collection of stories about the members of a powerful Wall Street law firm, is a fine example of the author's quiet, matter-of-fact studies of the American upper class. I particularly liked "The Power of Appointment", the story of an aging lawyer who has always lived.

From Publishers Weekly. Louis Auchincloss is an American novelist. In his 40th book, the author continues the fictional chronicles of the New York elitist establishment and their insidiously controlling power plays. Among his many works are Last of the Old Guard, The Headmaster’s Dilemma, and East Side Story. Still, few give way to total despair.

Louis Auchincloss was honored in the year 2000 as a Living Landmark by the New York Landmarks Conservancy. During his long career he wrote more than sixty books, including the story collection Manhattan Monologues and the novel The Rector of Justin

The Partners is a masterful characterization of moral men navigating an amoral world, of lawyers, their families, and the rich and powerful people they serve. Vintage e, ironic, sympathetic, affecting. Auchincloss is particularly good with the interior reality of seemingly minor conflicts; he also shows, over and over again, that seemingly large and dramatic conflicts are often not the important ones.
