First: If you're looking for light reading, go somewhere else. But if you really want to get into the minds of the protagonists and the 'logic' that drives their actions, boy, this is the book for you. It was for me, anyway. I ended up consulting an encyclopedia during the course of my reading just to get background on the real person, philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, that drives the killer's actions, and kept a dictionary on hand for the occasional bit of jargon not common in my vernacular. The story is set in 2013, which was the not distant future when written (1992). But, like all predictions of our future, we haven't achieves anything technologically like the author thought we would, although we're pretty much there socially. That said, moving one's SciFi brain into the "alternate reality" mode, everything fit. The story hinges upon the interaction of a police inspector (UK) and a serial killer, and it kept me interested. And, more importantly, I felt no disappointment in the ending. It ended very well.

Wow, I just finished this book last night and found it to be an interesting, but a very different type of story. The book was a futuristic thriller that was an intellectual challenge. If I had a background in Philosophy, I probably would have appreciated many of the subtleties and factual references. Nevertheless, it was not a disappointment. The book had the right balance of sex, character development, especially Jake the Chief Investigator, who was definitely one tough woman with her own personal issues. While there was a lot of rambling narrative, it was worth getting through to appreciate the story of the hunt. The RA suit and device was novel and probably wasn't too far from fact to fiction. I had a bit of a vicarious enjoyment of the situations that were portrayed. Now, if I can only buy one on line, I would be all set to take it to the next level. I am very glad that I have discovered this author and am looking forward to reading more books by him. He really tells a great story and has the perfect balance of humor, in any circumstance or situation, to enhance the story.

I am a fan of Mr. Kerr, so I thought I would try this early novel and a non-Gunther one. This is a stunning novel, and one of the most interesting books I have read in some time. People who are not somewhat en courant in philosophy might be put off by the philosophical bits, but there are not enough, I think, to not read this volume. Kerr, as usual, knows how to write and puts on the mantle of a narration that is quite different from a Gunther novel. Wonderful book.

I love Kerry's Bernie Gunther series. Couldn't get into this book at all, so I did something I seldom do: I quit barely 1/4 into it.

A Philosophical Investigation is definitely not in the "Bernie Gunther" genre. It is far more suited to those philosophical readers rather than those who want a relaxing and entertaining read added with the great insights into WW2. Philip Kerr shows off his philosophical knowledge, which is impressive, but I feel is unnecessarily too heavy in the volume of philosophical debating that occurs regularly in this book. I was hoping it was like his other books, all of which I love, but not to be so!

Awful. Described as a "cult novel". I guess that means unreadable. I got about as far in this as in Ayn Rand's novels, about 25 pages. I hate to throw away a book, but I hate worse to waste time. All of Phillip Kerr's other books are good, so I was disappointed.

I love Philip Kerr, but i must admit that this novel is not up to the levels reached in the Bernie Gunther series. I put it down after having read about half in favor of something more exciting. I intend to finish it, however. Perhaps the second half will be more compelling. Kerr's other science fictiony novel, i think it was called "The Grid", was a provocative page-turner which swept me away completely.
This is an engaging , if challenging tale. It bounces from mind to mind, including the reader's own. It recalls much from 1984 and serves as a reminder of the rigor of Wittgenstein's logic. It challenges preconception of morality, all while involving the reader in a good detective story with a nihilistic twist.
