Thomas Carlyle (4 December 1795 – 5 February 1881) was a British historian, satirical writer, essayist, translator, philosopher, mathematician, and teacher. His works included On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and The Heroic in History, where he argued that the actions of the "Great Man" play a key role in history, claiming that "the history of the world is but the biography of great men".

Thomas was the eldest of his parents’ nine children, having three younger brothers named Alexander, John Aitken and James, and five sisters named Janet, Margaret, Mary, Jean and Janet. From his father’s first marriage, he also had one half-brother named John. In November 1809, Thomas Carlyle moved to Edinburgh, reaching the city after walking for three days.
