Paris is in mourning

Paris is in mourning. At the fireworks display marking the Dauphin's marriage to Marie Antoinette, hundreds of people have been injured or crushed to death. When a second murder is washed up by the Seine with the same curious injuries, events begin to gather pace, leading Le Floch to Versailles, as he attempts to solve what is far more than a simple case of murder. On a diplomatic trip to Vienna, Commissioner Nicolas Le Floch only just survives an attempt on his life as he investigates the breakdown of French secret intelligence in the city.

This is an excellent historical mystery, part of a series by the French writer Parot well translated into English. We first became acquainted with Nicolas Le Floch through the French TV adaptations which are shown on MHZ. The books are even better than the excellent TV adaptation. Well worth the read for mystery lovers.

This author brings the 18th century to life and the Revolution is hanging over the heads of Royalty and decadent Aristo's....Nicolas is perfect! More Please, and soon!
Love Me
I read the first book and was thrilled to see that there was already a second in the series. Great for lovers of historical detective fiction, as I am. Wonderful period detail doesn't swamp the mystery and intrigue. Will definitely want to read the next one.

In 1761, gunshots are heard by family and staff inside the locked bedroom of the son of the Comte de Ruissec. Although the evidence overwhelmingly points to a suicide, recently promoted to Commissioner (due to his excellent handling of the Lardin affair; see The Chatelet Apprentice), Nicolas Le Floch believes a homicide occurred by a brilliant killer who brilliantly staged the death.

Comte de Ruissec refuses to cooperate with the police inquiry into his son’s death, but he uses his being part of Princess Adelaide’s retinue to try to end the investigation or at least thwart the inquiry. Though there is pressure on Le Floch to stop the case, his boss Sartine warns him to tread extremely carefully as he deals with the non-cooperating or misinforming aristocracy in Versailles and less so amidst the brothels and theaters of Paris. When the Commissioner learns the deceased owed an exorbitant gambling debt that forced him to end his relationship with an angry actress in order to become engaged to a wealthy older woman; he ponders whether the motive lies somewhere in the victim’s recent relationships.

The second Le Floch eighteenth century French police procedural is a strong investigative historical starring a wonderful protagonist who has come a long way from his country bumpkin start. Readers will enjoy Le Floch’s inquiry into what appears to be a suicide though the cop and his assistant Inspector Bourdeau lean towards a locked room murder.

very complex historical French police procedural. How much you enjoy this will depend on how interested you are in French history and culture because it is critical to understanding what is going on. It's always interesting to read the popular books from another country- and this is a good translation, Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. I enjoyed this but it wasn't an especially easy read- it requires more attention than most. Recommend.

Jean Francois Parot has all the ingredients he needs for a clever line of historical whodunits, but this time he has rather over-cooked things. The Man with the Lead Stomach is the second outing for young Police Commissioner Nicolas le Floch who serves Louis XV of France. The year is 1761 and plots, conspiracies and betrayals abound in wartime Europe. The story has a modern edge to it and Parot is very good at bringing the glamour and grime of the 18th century to life. But the plot he pitches his dashing, bon vivant hero into is over-elaborate and unconvincing. The series has done well in France so hopefully le Floch's subsequent escapades are easier to follow and therefore more enjoyable.
